Airplane Pet Peeves & the Joy of Flying
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We vent our biggest air travel pet peeves from the gate to baggage claim, then zoom out to remember why flying still feels like a modern miracle. We share the etiquette rules we wish everyone followed, plus the tiny in-flight wins that make the whole trip smoother.
• gate crowding and lining up before your zone
• oversized carry-ons and aisle-blocking during boarding
• middle seat armrest “rights” and seat choice trade-offs
• seatback grabbing and other personal-space violations
• window shade control and being mindful of glare
• chatty seatmates and simple ways to signal “not today”
• the great reclining debate and why it changes everything
• seat swap etiquette and when to say no
• the gross stuff like bare feet, hair over screens, and nail clipping
• standing up right after landing and pushing past rows
• baggage carousel crowding and how to speed it up for everyone
• the joys of flight, disconnecting, and the adventure waiting on arrival
• geocaching, Adventure Labs, and Munzee opportunities during layovers

SPEAKER_04On today's episode, I'm leaving on a jet plane.
SPEAKER_02I'm leaving on a jet plane.
SPEAKER_01Don't know if I'll be back again.
SPEAKER_04I even heard Goliath bark at you then in the background, too. Not even he, even he's like, you know, Dad, stop singing. You're always singing every episode.
SPEAKER_01Yes, singing, singing, singing, singing.
SPEAKER_02No, he was like, Dad, you're you're speaking my language.
SPEAKER_04And he's just like, Oh he wants to join in. That's what it is. That's what it is.
SPEAKER_02So or up, or else he's upset at that. I'm leaving on a jet plane.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. So today's episode, Josh, we're actually talking about uh the positives and negatives of uh of air travel, are we? Is that what it is? Oh, yes, pet peeves and the joys of flying.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we can't just go negative, we can't just go negative.
SPEAKER_04We have to we have to end on the positive, correct, correct, but we can start negative though, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because there are so many annoying things when it comes to air travel, and so yeah, this is a very much travel-heavy podcast this time.
SPEAKER_04Oh, it is.
SPEAKER_02You know, sometimes we talk about geocaching, Munzie, yeah, Skydrift. No, we've never talked, we've never talked about Skydrift. But Skydrift is a travel, oh, that's a travel location-based game. We might have to do a show on Skydrift. We may have to do that's not a bad idea, to be honest. Not a bad idea.
SPEAKER_04We could get we could get uh the two developers of Skydrift, which is uh Rob Vaderman and also Scott. I don't know Scott's last name, but uh Scott, he's the uh programmer for uh for Skydrift. Okay, so there you go. We might get those two on. So I know Rob listens to this show every now and then. So Rob, if you're listening, there you go, mate. There you go.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_04But speaking of negatives and pet peeves, Josh, let's start off with uh uh delays and our upgrades. So tell me, sir, what's uh what is your delay? You can start off first. What's your delay?
SPEAKER_02Oh man, you know, I am the person in my day job where I train people and I work in schools, so the month of August is full out training our people to go out there and work in the schools, and so the month of August is pretty much my work Super Bowl where I am just busy, busy. I'm on my feet every day training people to be the best they can be, and I'm just I'm just dog tired. I'm so happy. Yeah, it's September, it's September, so it's turning around, but I'm tired. But now, but now it's September, and now they're out there doing it, and I'm I'm breathing a little bit easier now. So that's that's good.
SPEAKER_04Nice, nice, nice. You're taking in the uh the the worries and complaints of those other customers out there, so that's what it is. Yeah, exactly. Meanwhile, so what is your upgrade for uh for this episode?
SPEAKER_02Oh
Munzee Mania Highs And Lows
SPEAKER_02my gosh, as we speak, as this is being released, I just experienced the ninth annual Munziey Mania, which is one of the most Minnesota in Minnesota, which is I'd say one of the most premier Munsey events in the country in the year, and let me tell you, it's a great time of year to be in Minnesota too. So we just started as we're recording this, we just started it tonight, and the weather was beautiful, low 70s, cool, not humid, getting outside, going for our nice Munsey, Munsey walk. It was just it was just delightful. So yeah, um, always a good time. Ninth annual Munsey Mania. There's gonna be a good chunk of people here. I think we'd probably be pushing about 50 Munsey players uh from all over the country. Got to see the number one player in the world tonight. Cole Grass Seven Linda got to see her, got to see Linda, gave her a hug, and yeah, it it it is a start of a great weekend. But the sad thing is, yeah, there's a sad thing, and I I think I'm just gonna segue right to your delay because there's some sadness around Munzy Mania.
SPEAKER_04The
Homestead Life And First Market Booth
SPEAKER_04delay is that my delay personally is that I'm not there. I'm not I'm not experiencing Munsey Mania this year, Josh. I mean, there is it's twofold for me. Um, number one, uh, it is financial as well, because it is a trip to get up there and stuff as well. Uh, but number two, I've actually got over 155 non-human mouths to feed twice a day here on the homestead. So yeah, it's well, it's well and truly up there now as well. So we're talking over 60, yeah, over 60 chickens alone.
SPEAKER_01Wow.
SPEAKER_04I know, right? I know of all ages. Three turkeys, two goats, uh, there's eight duck now as well. Um, yeah, and 90 93 quail. So there you go. Actually, 90, 90, 92 quail, because one died today.
SPEAKER_02Wow. So when does it go from being a homestead to just a fallout farm?
SPEAKER_04Well, me personally, I mean, it's still gonna it's always gonna be a homestead. For me, for me, and and look, everyone's got different ideas. It's a that's a good question. What's a homestead compared to a farm? Uh, in my mind, a homestead is one whereby it's more self-contained rather than a commercial entity. Um, in other words, you know, uh, yeah, we collect the eggs here and stuff. Yeah, we sell the eggs and whatever as well on in our farm stand, but we're not on a commercial basis. We don't we don't sell uh you know the eggs and what sort of stuff to to um supermarkets and all that sort of thing, too. We just literally got a little farm stand at the front. It's more for us about self-sustainability. Um, you know, I process the quail, we have meat, I process chickens, we have meat, you know, from that too. So uh I don't sell the the quail meat, I don't sell the chicken meat. You know, that's for us to eat ourselves. So I think personally, that's my personal opinion that a homestead is one of which whereby you become more self-sufficient, self-reliant. Um, it turns into a farm when it becomes more commercial based. So yeah, so that's all okay good question though, Josh.
SPEAKER_02Wow, yeah, I didn't know. I didn't really know that. That's learning something new every day. That's fantastic.
SPEAKER_04And that leads into my uh my segue, into my upgrade, Josh. And that is this weekend, we're actually heading to our very, very first as a vendor, a farmer's market. So we've got uh we've got jellies and jams, we've got uh different four things products, we've got some uh homemade candles now as well. Jen's been doing some homemade candle stuff. We've got these things. I never heard of these things, Josh. Maybe they're American, maybe you've heard of it. A simmer pot. Have you heard of a simmer pot?
SPEAKER_02Oh, is that like is that like uh like there's oils in it or whatever, and you heat it up and then and then the the scent comes out of them? Is that correct?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so we don't actually have oils. This is all natural products. So because we've got a freeze dryer here as well, and again, the freeze dryer is primarily for us to conserve food for ourselves. Um, but we we free we freeze-dried like you know, oranges and apples and cinnamon and all those sort of the herbs and spices, yeah, which then go into a little packet, and that packet then gets emptied into a pot on the stove, and that that that pot of water on the stove can sit there for a week, for instance, and then you heat it up every afternoon, um, and it just it the fragrance just goes throughout the entire house. So yeah, simmer pots they're called.
SPEAKER_02I think we call that potpourri, maybe too.
SPEAKER_04Poppourri in Australia is is set. We don't have that in the we don't put it on the stove. Poppourri in Australia we have is just in a in a little container, something like a candle sort of style, but not burning. So yeah, there you go.
SPEAKER_02There you go. Well, that's exciting. Do you have like a banner and everything?
SPEAKER_04Oh, please. Yeah, you're talking a great. I've got I don't not just have the banners, we've got the um the the canopy thing as well. I've even got, you know, those uh elastified, elastified, that's a good word. Um elastic sort of tablecloths, but we we don't have the normal elastic tablecloths. No, no, no. We've got the logos all over our tablecloths as well. So yeah, you know me, man, you know me. Um we got the the A-frame board for advertising, we've got different products on hand as well. Um, we're doing a because it's our first one as well, so we're gonna do a little giveaway, you know, for for people who actually come um and visit the they can fill in a little form and go in a draw for a giveaway and all sorts, too. So it's a bit more, a bit more fun to get our name and brand out there.
SPEAKER_02So question Do you have a like a little card with a QR code that takes you to the YouTube channel so people can see where their products are coming from?
SPEAKER_04Absolutely we do. Yes, absolutely we do. We've got all our social medias, whether it be the YouTube, uh, the YouTube, the Facebook, the Instagram. Um, we've got all that sort of stuff. Uh, but also another quite exciting thing, too, is that we've uh been reached out to by a brand new app. And the the new app itself, I'm just gonna try and remember the name of the new app. Um, but the this this new app itself reached out to us and said Stands by Me. It's called Stands by Me. And this app is all about uh farm stands, you know, uh across the good old US of A. And so what they do is we're we're now part of a founding member of uh Stands by Me. We can then put our products and our location on this particular item of the Stand By Me app. People can know where we are through GPS locations, but it gets better, Josh, because there's a QR code or everything QR code. Right there's a there's a QR code just for us that we sit inside our farm stand so people can actually check in, like like Munzie. Boop, and they can check in. And then every five check-ins, Josh, they get a free dozen eggs. Oh, so there you go. Okay, that's smart. I like it. So stands by me, it's called, and it's not just not just Alabama, it's it's USA-wide. So wherever you are in the US and you want to visit any farm stand around the area, have a look. Download the app Stands by Me. It's free. Um, and then you can just browse the uh the stands near you and maybe go and pick up yourself some nice little uh local fresh eggs, Josh, and whatever else as well.
SPEAKER_02So I also love the name, it's boo-doo-doo.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I knew you would. You don't know the words, so you just hum the no, I did.
SPEAKER_01Oh, darling, darling, stands by me. Oh, stands, buy me, get some eggs for free. Stands by me.
SPEAKER_04Look at that. I'm gonna have to send them the link now to this episode. I'll say that much.
SPEAKER_02So just free advertising right there.
SPEAKER_04Free advertising, some off the cuff stuff as well. So look at the brand. You could be like uh you're like a um uh a 1960s MMs. It's just on the fly, that's all it is. So there you go. All right, sir. Let's
Why Flying Brings Out Pet Peeves
SPEAKER_04get into it. Enough of the chit chat, enough of the band. It's time to go forth. It's time to gray pet peeves.
SPEAKER_03Get our pet peeves out as well.
SPEAKER_02I need to get it, I need to get it out of my system, Craig, before I fly because I just this is the stuff I just think about. It just it annoys me. It's sometimes it's the inconvenience, sometimes it's the not feeling comfortable. There's so many things about air travel that are so frustrating, but don't worry, we're gonna get to the end of this episode because let's be honest, the miracle of flight is a pretty amazing thing. Um, so we'll get we'll get to some of the joys of air travel as well.
SPEAKER_04Before we do though, Josh, before we do it, do you can you think of one uh one uh just give me one? Just give me one. Uh and it might be small, it might be large, a pet peeve flight where you've taken a flight and there's been some sort of pet peeve of yours as well. Just give us one to start off. If people don't know what a pet peeve is, for instance, give us an example of a pet peeve, one that you've experienced.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so this is the first one that comes to mind. I think I've actually talked about it on this podcast at one time or another. And it has to do with deboarding the plane the moment the plane gets to the gate and the little take seat belt off light comes on, and then all of a sudden, there's like 50 dudes, usually it's dudes, standing in the aisle, getting their stuff, and then just standing, proceeding to stand there in the aisle for I don't know, probably 30 more minutes, 15 minutes. I'm like, and all I'm thinking is, guys, where are you going? You're you're where are you going? You don't have to stand up. You don't have to stand up. Just wait your turn, remove your stuff and leave. You don't have to stand. And I know what you're gonna say, Craig, because I've heard you said it before. Yeah, what's that? Just gotta stretch your legs and blah blah blah.
SPEAKER_04Because I because I me personally, I am, and we're gonna talk about that exact pet peeve, Josh, uh, very, very soon. But just to let everyone know, I am one of those men that stand up. Only if I'm in an aisle seat. Only if I'm in an aisle seat. Now there's two-pronged effect. Well, actually, three. First one is stretching your legs. You know, I'd rather get up and stand up. I'm I'm six foot, Josh. You know what I mean? I've been sitting in coach, for instance, for for so long. My my knees are sore from the back of the seat in front of me. I like to get up and stretch my legs. That's number one. Number two, I like to get my stuff because sometimes, you know, you've got a connecting flight. So you want to get ready and be ready for when you are available. But number three, and this is the most important one, is that you block anyone from behind you from actually skipping the queue.
SPEAKER_02So okay, that's valid because that's another one of my pet peeves. That's another one. See, that's when you have the window seat and everybody is actually, you know, row by row, take your turn, and then somebody just like goes right past you. Yeah, yeah. I'm like, what are you doing?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's well, that's that's on our list as well. That's on this as well. But Josh,
Gate Chaos And Boarding Mistakes
SPEAKER_04let's first and start first and foremost, let's start off with before you get on the plane. So before the even plane goes and whatever, you're sitting in the in the in the lounge, that area, the boarding gate area. Um what are your your thoughts in processing? What's your pet peeve at the gate?
SPEAKER_02I do really get annoyed with people that feel like they have to line up to get on the plane like right away, especially if they're in like zone six or seven, where it doesn't really, it doesn't really matter because by then if you're out of uh overhead space, yeah, you're gonna probably you're gonna be out of it anyway. Um so people are like people are rushing to get on the plane. The plane is going to leave at the same time. You are going to have to sit in that seat longer because you decided I have to get in the plane right away. And then people just crowd, you know, crowd around the the desk. And I'm just like, especially if it's or if their gate has not been called and they're just like kind of in the way of the people that are that are getting in sooner. I have a Delta Sky Miles American Express card, not sponsored, but if you're listening to American Express, I'll take the miles. Uh and so just because I have that, it doesn't give me like like first class boarding, but I get like I'm I'm like in the upper like four zone three or four. And so then those five, six, seven, and eight zone people are like kind of like in the way. I'm like, guys, your gate hasn't even called yet. Or those people, or those people that don't pay attention to what gate is on their is on their ticket, and then they're in line and they get to the front, and then the people, you know, the flight attendants are just like, just go. Like, they're not gonna make them get in line again. And I'm like, you just budged. I got my American Express Delta card for a reason to get my to get my average uh slightly above average zone four. And you you got the zone eight and you just budged in front of me.
SPEAKER_01Passionate.
SPEAKER_04Wow, this is this is I I this is actually getting better than what I thought it was gonna be the episode was gonna be, just saying, because Josh is very passionate. I like it. I like it. Tell us Josh as well. Uh for me personally, for me uh itself, is more about um the size of people's carry-ons. Now there is a there is a particular size. Now, in Australia, they're very strict on this too, by the way. In Australia, in Australia, you've actually got at every single gate, you've got a particular size thing that your bag must fit in. If it doesn't fit in that size bag, then it has to be checked no matter what it is. That's in Australia. In Australia, it gets even better because here in America, sometimes they'll say, you know, oh look, the overhead lockers are really full. We've got a full uh, you know, if you want to check your bag for free, uh your carry-on board can be checked for free, come and see it to the desk. They're quite nice here in Australia. If your bag doesn't fit in that thing, you have to check it, and it costs you money because you didn't check it to begin with. So yeah, in Australia, it's uh very different in that regard. But for me personally, the personal items, I'm like, come on, come on. And I understand, you know, people want to try and get in, but you know, in most cases, I know I'm I'm a united guy, you know that. And uh we we're we're allowed two two car we're allowed a carry-on and a personal item as well.
SPEAKER_02So that's most most um airlines.
SPEAKER_04But sometimes those those carry-ons can be the almost the suitcase. It's like, come on, guys.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Are you are you we still talking about the the boarding the plane because there's another one that's really annoying? Oh, yeah, is when you're tour your your seat is towards the back of the plane, and then people block the aisle to put their stuff up instead of like stepping aside into their aisle to let you pass, they just they hold up everybody behind them. Oh, it's so and it just makes the whole boarding process so much slower. I'm like, really, just all you have to do is step aside, let the person walk past you, and then put your bag up there on the top.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so no, not not self-aware. I I will admit, I'm I'm one of those people whereby I will I'll but I'm more self-aware. In other words, like I'll look, and if there is someone directly behind me wanting to push through, I will do that scooch over. But if there's someone behind, if there's only oh if the person's too slow, I'm I'm in there quick as can be. You know what I mean? That's all we're gonna do.
SPEAKER_02No, that's fine, but I there's times I'm literally just standing there and just like just waiting for them to deal with it. And then sometimes I'll be a good person. I'll actually like help them if they're struggling. Oh, yeah. Yeah, and it's more selfishness, it's more like I'm just gonna get this going so you can get out of my way.
SPEAKER_04Everyone's listening to the true Joshua now that you're gonna put that here he is. Um, well, Josh, for me personally as well, it's it's once you get it because normally here uh you have the three seats on each side. So you got the uh the aisle, the window, and then the middle seat as well. Yes.
Seat Rules Armrests And Personal Space
SPEAKER_04Let's quickly discuss and give me your thoughts on the middle seat. So you get in there and you're you know, you know, you're in the middle seat, you go, oh the middle seat, that's something as well. What's your take on having the middle seat? I'm talking about the armrest more importantly here than anything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I do believe that the armrests belong to both armrests belong to the person in the middle seat. I do believe that the person in the window seat, they have the window, so they can lean, they have the chance to lean up against it. The person on the aisle has a maybe a little bit more leg room because they can spread out a little bit into the aisle slightly. So I believe that middle seat person deserves both armrests. The only pushback I would say for that is typically the people that have the middle seat are the ones that were not responsible as responsible that morning. All those people have checked in later, right? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And so it's yeah, they're the ones that are on uh that that not checked in later, but they're the the what are not the emergency flights, what's it called? Those ones that the uh they had to change their flights or whatever as well because the yeah, that's what they do.
SPEAKER_02So you don't know. Or or they decided not to, you know, a lot of airlines you can purchase for six bucks what seat seat you pick, and they were cheap, and they decided not to do that, and then just let fate decide, and fate usually decides, middle seat. So that would be so, but you know, I I I was just talking to somebody at Munseymania tonight, and you know, it's especially if there's like a small lady in the middle seat, and then there's two men that are just like manspread, like on both sides. It's just uh that's that's just a that's a bummer.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, absolutely is. Um, tell me though, Josh. If I if if I'm listening to this podcast and I think to myself, you know, that's happened to me before, you know. I've been in the middle seat and and I've had man, you know, people spreading out. What is your take? What is your go-to? How do you deal with that, sir? And if you're that person that's being uh taken over, so to speak, do you you you hustle and bustle with your shoulders and your elbows, or do you have to speak up and say something?
SPEAKER_02Uh I'm not I'm not particularly controversial on a plane because people get kind of crazy up there. Yeah, you never know the kind of person. And I'm not a big I'm just not a big talker on a plane either. No, no. So the minute I start chatting with somebody, you never know if that person's just gonna be super chatty and they're just gonna want to chat with you the rest of the flight. So I just I just end up dealing with it. Like there's I we're gonna we're gonna talk about another huge pet peeve. Like it literally makes me boil coming up. And I and I'll say this that thing makes me boil so much that I I still won't tell the people that it annoys me. Even when it's the number one for you. Yeah, it's number one. We'll get to it.
SPEAKER_04And you still won't uh open up and talk about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I'm not a big yeah, deal with it. Yeah, I'm not a controversial person up in the air because Jake can. I mean, you've seen you we we watched the viral videos, people can go crazy up there.
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's only recently there where it went viral as well. There's that guy, it was in first class, and they duct taped him to the seat and put the duct tape around his head and around his uh wrists and ankles and everything, bound him to the seat. That's how bad.
SPEAKER_02Or what about that viral video of that woman that points to the guy in the back of the plane that says that she's not real?
SPEAKER_01That man is not real, he's not real.
SPEAKER_04She she said that he blinked in a different fashion or something. He blinked sideways, blinked instead of he's a lizard man, he's not real. Um, that's what the the claim to be for that one was. But it's oh my gosh, it's it's things happen up there. I don't know whether it's the the lack of oxygen or too much oxygen. I don't know what it is, Josh, but it's it is something to do with planes. Um, meanwhile, Josh, the other thing as well, and we as you're boarding the plane, I am very, very, very cautious of this because I hate this one. This is one of my bigger pet peeves, and that is I normally always go for an aisle seat. I'm an aisle seat guy. I like my aisle seat. I'm not a really window guy, hate the center seat. I'm an aisle guy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know, I'll happily get up and down for people if they want to go to the bathroom. I don't have an issue with that. But for me personally, and this is this is as you sit down on the plane, but it's also during the flight as well. The people who use your seat behind you as as a as a like an arm. Leverage leverage to pull themselves up and your head goes forward and back and it shocks you around and your eyeballs shutter as well. So yeah, don't be one of those people.
SPEAKER_03So annoying.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I hope I hope we're educating people. I because you know, if you do these things, maybe this we're maybe we're doing a public service uh, you know. Be more aware. Exactly. That this is a lesson of this episode. Be more aware in small spaces.
SPEAKER_04That's right. One question I've got for you, Josh. Are you uh which seat are you sir? Are you a window or an aisle?
SPEAKER_02Mostly window. Mostly. Especially if I have like a flight where I want to sleep. Oh, there's a flight I want to lean, yeah, because then I can just lean fully against that window, yeah, and I can get sleep. If it's if it's a shorter flight, if it's like two hours or less, I'm an aisle person. Um, it is I do again, not very controversial or controversial, uh, confrontational. I will sometimes hold my pee too long. Oh, I feel bad when there's two people on the aisle in the middle seat that are like sleeping, and I'm just having to pee. So that's that is the bad bad thing about about the window seat is is having those people get up. But most of the time, I'd say 80% of the time, I'm a window, window person.
SPEAKER_04That's fair enough. Mate, uh, another question I've got for you. Would you rather would you rather board early and take your time, like with the whole plane boarding early and taking your time, or would you board late and spend fewer minutes on the plane?
SPEAKER_02The latter. I would board late. And I have. There's times they're just like, I'm just gonna let everybody get on this plane. And you know, sometimes sometimes, you know, it's the rationale is oh, I want to get the overhead space. But you know what? Yeah, a lot of times I board last and then they run out of overhead space and then they just check my bag for free.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so see for me, for me, I'm I'm the opposite. I need to board early because I and that's the reason why is that I do need number one, I need the overhead space, and number two is that I need the overhead space directly over my head because normally for me, Josh, I've got all my camera gear and equipment uh, you know, in there as well, which I cannot have thrown around in underneath, you know. But that's two. So that's that's my rationale, it's my reason. Otherwise, you know, I don't really mind if I don't have that equipment with me, then I don't mind boarding a little bit later. Um, I am uh and the other reason why I'm an Isle guy as well is because a lot of times for me now, especially, I've got uh layover flights, and you know what it's like with layover flights, especially like you know, you sit on the tarmac, for instance, on the first flight, and it's it's oh hang on, we should have left five minutes ago. Hang on, we should have left, you know, 10 minutes ago. Hang on a second, we're still here at 15 minutes. And the the longer you wait on that first tarmac, then the shorter time period you have for the layover. And when your layover is only an hour long, you're like so I'm an IO guy for that reason as well. So yeah, for sure. Meanwhile, Josh, uh, who who do you fly with that that you get in the most?
SPEAKER_02Usually Delta, Delta, usually Delta, but sometimes Sun Country if I'm trying to save money.
SPEAKER_04Because in uh here's a fun fact for you up until uh I think it was 2018, a lot of aircrafts in the US they used to board back to front. In other words, they used to board all the back from people first, and then they they go forward before they changed it. So before that's what they used to do. Now they do it whereby they're first class and then they go from in order that way. And the reason for it, Josh, do you know the reason for it? Why? Mythbusters, myth, good old Mythbusters, they actually did a full-on weekend uh, and it's uh the uh the link as well as in the show notes for this, too. They're actual the fastest way to board an aeroplane by the Mythbusters, where they had a full plane, pretend plane set up, they had all the people there as well. So the plane was full, all their carry-on luggage, and they timed each they timed five different ways to board the plane. The boarding of the plane was best done the way it is now, not previously. Previously, with that from back to front, believe it or not, is twice as takes twice as long to board the plane. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's funny, because I don't, you know, I I don't think I've ever I don't think I've ever been in a plane where it boarded back to front. Which which again, you think that would be faster, but really they is front to back is faster.
SPEAKER_04Front to back is faster. Well, it's actually it's not necessarily front to back per se. What is it? It's front first, and then it sort of it goes it goes front to back, but they they predominantly try and do the sides first before the actual aisle seats, you see.
SPEAKER_02Oh, so they're yeah, so they're giving the zones to the zones, yeah. The zones to the window seats are they're letting those people get in first. Okay, correct. I Delta, I don't think Delta does anything. Um you know, in Europe though, the fastest planes I've ever reported are ones that have um you're loading there's a door in the back and the door in the front.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah, we have them in Australia too.
SPEAKER_02Which and usually sometimes it's smaller planes, and those planes load really quick because the people in the back of the plane go to the back door, and the people the front of the plane go to the front door. All planes should be like that, I think.
SPEAKER_04The ones in Australia, you're actually walking on the tarmac as well to get up to the go up the back steps, you know, that's like too. So yeah, it's uh a lot quicker, a lot easier. Um, but then again, some people, you know, they still go to the wrong door. You got door number one, the front, door number two at the back, and they still go to the back instead of the front or the front or the back. So you can't help these things sometimes. So there you go. So there you go. All right, now you've on you get on the plane, Josh.
Window Shades Chatty Neighbors And Noise
SPEAKER_04You're on the plane itself. We've you spoke about this before in regards to chatty seatmates. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Chatty seatmates. What do you do about chatty seatmates? What's the best way do you think to avoid chatty seatmates?
SPEAKER_02No eye contact, yes, headphones in, look out your wind, look out your window.
SPEAKER_04If you're in the window seat. If you don't have the window seat, do what I do. Sleep, sleep, yeah. Either you scream to sleep, or I uh have my headphones in and I start watching a movie on my iPad. Because I take my iPad with downloaded movies and TV shows that I'm still watching, and uh so I'll just look look busy though. I'm doing that, for instance. Look busy, you know, look busy, uh, and there you go. So chatty seat mates, and please, please, please, don't be one of those chatty, chatty seatmates.
SPEAKER_02It's okay to be friendly. Friendly is good, just like but don't like be aware. Like, if people are obviously like not into the conversation, you don't have to keep going on and on and on, right?
SPEAKER_04Exactly, exactly. Next thing I will say, Josh, is the uh the window shades themselves. So if you're not on the window seat, the wit do you have any say on whether that shade is up or down?
SPEAKER_02No, the window seat has full control, full control. If like similar to the fact that the middle seat should have both arms rests, the window seat has control, but at the same time, you don't, as a window seat person, you don't have can full control. The flight attendants will come over and tell you to put it down. Yeah, we'll put it up, yeah. Or put it up, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Put it up, put it up for for landing. Takeoff and landing. Yeah, yeah. But they yeah, but also be mindful. Also be mindful in regards to especially you know, leave it up for takeoff. That's all well and good, but then maybe put it down, especially if the sun is gonna beam straight through that uh window, and someone's someone's trying to watch something on their iPad or whatever, and they can't see anything because of the sun reflection and whatever as well.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_04So, yeah, just be more mindful of that if you are a window seat. But I'm the same as you, Josh. I think a window seat, they are the controller of that actual window shade. So exactly. Next one I have for you, Josh, is uh reclining.
Reclining Seat Swaps And The Ratings
SPEAKER_04This is a reclining. Here it is. Tell us here it is legally, legally, the the they'll say as well, no reclining uh when you're takeoff and landing. They know that. But what do you, sir, reclining once airborne?
SPEAKER_02I this is the thing that just makes me so angry. Is the person I I get that the seats have the ability to recline. I get that it is designed to recline, but reclining your seat is I in my view, just so damn rude. I said damn on this podcast. It is it's rude. You are it is rude. I never recline my seat, I never recline it. Yeah, even when somebody reclines it on me, my the the the screen is literally like and my knees are almost literally touching. Yeah, you you just completely changed the whole experience of the person behind you when you recline that, especially if you recline it all the way. Yes, yes, I think it's very selfish.
SPEAKER_04You gotta think about it as well, even though the the the tray table in front of you that doesn't actually move because that's separate to the reclining component, thank goodness. But if you if you recline back, some of your actual headrest then goes over this the the the airspace, one of a better word, the airspace of that tray. So you can't have a nice big water bottle, for instance, like you know, uh an Evian water bottle there or whatever. You you've got your let me personally, I have my uh iPad sitting up on that as well. That that gets knocked over, that gets knocked down.
SPEAKER_02I was like, Yeah, so it's so annoying. People the the the plane should not be designed that to recline. I I don't even think I think it's poor design. Um, and even even Craig, if you recline your if somebody reclines yours in front of you, and then you recline yours, it doesn't really make it that much better for you either. No, it just makes it worse for the person behind you.
SPEAKER_04That's right, and even worse if you're the last person on that plane who can't recline.
SPEAKER_02Oh, right, it's a domino.
SPEAKER_04It is a domino effect. I like it, I like it. All right, Josh. Another question I've got for you this is before you actually take off as well. Seat swapping, sir. What's your opinion on seat swapping? Now, if people don't know, uh first and foremost, uh, how would you go about seeing why would you want a seat swap, for instance, as well? I will say this I'll give you the example. The example is that uh Josh and I, we're we're you know good mates and stuff as well. We book our tickets, so Josh is at the window and I'm in the aisle, and there's supposed to be no one next to us, for instance, you know, but we want to sit together, and then someone books and pays for the seat in between and sits next to in between us. What's your opinion on sweet seat swapping from there? Who who who asked for the seat swap?
SPEAKER_02It's okay to request a seat swap if you were technically downgrading your seat. So if you and I are both aisle and window, and we ask the person in the middle to go to the aisle or window, that's actually benefiting them.
SPEAKER_04They might upgrade for them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I think it's okay to ask, and I would say 99% of the time the person's gonna do it. Yeah. Um, if you're asking somebody to take them like they have to move into a middle seat, not okay. That's just rude.
SPEAKER_01That's just rude.
SPEAKER_02It's like you get over it, you can talk to your friend anytime. I'm not I paid for a window seat, and now you're asking me to sit in the aisle. No way. I'm not I'm saying no. I'm saying no to that.
SPEAKER_04You're saying no. So in your in your mind, window seat is the number one, uh, aisle seat's number two, and then middle seat's number three in that order. So I think so. In your terms of your in my view. In your view, in your opinion. So other people would have a similar opinion, but they'd swap the aisle and window. Aisle for them would be number one, window for banana two, that's something too. So so there you go. Oh, very interesting, Josh. I well, I'm I'm with you in most of these cases as well. And I'm the same that you have to offer you, you're going to the one asking, you have to offer them a better deal. Yes, you have to give them a better seat. You can't be asking someone to move and give them a worse seat than what they're already in.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely, absolutely. I like it. I like it. Do you have any uh have any have any personal experience? Can you remember a time when that has happened to you?
SPEAKER_02That somebody asked me to change seats. Yeah, yeah. I I think it's especially if if a parent wants to sit next to a child, too. I think you I think you gotta be like, yeah, you can sit by your child. Yeah, or it or it's a you know a couple, but yeah, I will not, I don't think I can think there's any time somebody's asked me and I've downgraded my seat.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, all right, Josh. Uh now I this I'm gonna I've got a list of questions here. Okay. These questions themselves, I need you to rate as how offensive these things are. From we said we said at the beginning, this is a pet peeve uh sort of episode, mostly a pet peeve episode. I like I like this. So number one is uh what rating of one is I can live with it, but just to a number five, a level five is absolutely not, no, it's not gonna happen. So one to five, one to five. Now first first question is watching videos without headphones.
SPEAKER_02Five.
SPEAKER_04Absolutely not. Absolutely not. Number two, sir. Wait, wait, wait.
SPEAKER_02Are you gonna answer these? You gotta answer this.
SPEAKER_04This is just for you. This is just I'll answer them too. I'll answer for me. Uh that's a four. That's a four for me. That's a four. I'm not, yeah, I'm less confrontational with some things like that. Because in my mind, I'll just try and turn my headphones up louder so I can sort of drag it. That's what I do for that. Uh, number two is loud conversations across rows. So, or if you're two two aisle seats across the middle row, for instance, or if you're in the middle seat and you've got two people speaking directly to each other from the window in the aisle. So loud conversations across rows, one to five.
SPEAKER_02So I'm not a fan of loud conversations in general in planes, so I'm gonna, but it's not the worst. So sometimes it's just people having a good old time. I'm gonna say four.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'll say three for this one. Again, same thing. I can actually pump up my my my whatever I'm listening to or watching. So from there. Uh the next one is strong perfume or or pungent food.
SPEAKER_02Okay, to me, those are two different things. They are I don't mind a strong smelling uh a good smelling person, two.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. I'm a two with that too. What about pungent food? In terms of like someone brings in an Indian curry, for instance, or that's a four that's a four, maybe maybe five. Yeah, I'll go, I'll go for a three for the pungent food. So this one here, Josh. This one here, I will let you know. This for me, everyone listen up very carefully. This one for me is a five. This is a five for me, and that is shoes off but socks on.
SPEAKER_02Oh god. Oh, if it stinks, I mean I've seen people, I've seen people with their with just their socks, and it hasn't you don't smell anything. Yeah, but so I'm gonna say, yeah, if it stinks, it's the worst. Yeah, if it's not, if it doesn't stink, it's a three.
SPEAKER_04Okay, there you go. Uh next one is this one is a five for me as well. This is gross. Bare feet near your seat.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's gross. Five.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. There we go. Um, and then I'll I'll save the I'll save the best one to last. But this one here for me, Josh. This one here for me is a five as well. Well, actually, no, sorry, it's a four. It depends on it's a four for me. And that is hair draped over your screen. Now, what we're talking about there, Josh, the person in front of you, lady, male, doesn't matter, they've got long hair. Uh-huh. And they they flick their hair backwards and it flushes over over the seat, over the headrest. And then it's the their hair is in front of your TV screen, sir. What is that from a one to five view?
SPEAKER_02So you remember when I'd say wouldn't never really tell anybody to do stuff. This is this draws a line. If you're gonna make me raw dog this flight and not watch my show, I'm gonna say something. That's a five. You can't you can't do that.
SPEAKER_04See, for me, for me, it's a it's a four because all I have to do is move my iPad screen and then their head click behind us because I'm always an iPad guy. I'm not a I'm not a speck of the screen TV guy. So there you go. This next one, Josh. This is gross. But but in saying that too, this happens more often than what people think, and that is clipping fingernails or toenails whilst on an airplane.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Toenails are worse than fingernails, but it is pretty bad. Toenails five, fingernails four.
SPEAKER_04Oh, see, five each for me for the both of those fingernails or toenails. It doesn't make any sense for me. You're leaving your DNA behind as gross. So there you go. And so you said if I asked you which one of you would say something, that would be the hair one for you.
SPEAKER_02The hair, I'd say something. Which one any of these you would say?
SPEAKER_04I wouldn't tell. I just you wouldn't deal with it. No, I'm not I'm not confrontational at all with this stuff. I just deal with it. Um, or I'll just give filthy looks as much as I can. So there you go. All right,
Deplaning Drama And Baggage Carousel Crowds
SPEAKER_04so now we've landed itself. Now we're talking about it as well. The your biggest pet peeve. Yeah, we're talking about standing up immediately as the plane comes to a halt and the seatbelt so ding ding goes off, and you get people standing in the aisle.
SPEAKER_02All I want to say, all I want to shout is, where are you going? Where are you going? You're going nowhere. You're going nowhere. Where are you going? And I get it, Craig. You're like, yeah, okay, stretch your feet. But you know what? You could have stretched your feet the whole flight. The thing, the seatbelt light isn't on the whole time. You can get up and walk around. And it doesn't take that long to get up, grab your bag, and leave. You don't need to stand there for 15 minutes.
SPEAKER_04This and this is this is one of the pet peeves for some people as well. And that is that some people wait until the aisle clears before they actually gather their belongings. So some people will sit there waiting, waiting, and then they move off, and then they get up, and then they get their belongings, and it's you're taking longer for the people behind you. Maybe, maybe. There's a fine line there for Josh. Josh is dancing a fine line, I can see right now. So there you go. But I will say this, Josh. If I am not on the aisle seat, I will not stand up. I will not move. I'll just sit there. If I'm in the middle seat or the window seat, I don't move. I don't stand up. Yeah, I won't let you. I don't, I'm not one of those ones who literally stands up and then hunches. Yeah, they're you see them. They hunch that? They hunch over. They hunch over. That's so ridiculous. Their heads hit the bins just so they can stand up. I know. I'm not one of those. Wow. So there you go. There you go. Um, what about this one, Josh, as well? We said this before, pushing past rows that are waiting to exit. In other words, if I'm what that guy standing up, if I'm one of them, you know, standing up in the aisle, ready to go, I am a decent fellow enough to let all the people that come out in front of me, even the ones that are in the window seat, you know, that are they waited for all the people to move and then they scooch over. I hear, I hear people behind me go ha ha making these grunting sounds, these annoyances sounds, but I like, I am not moving. This person needs to go before I go because I am not that sort of guy. So yeah, do not rush past people who haven't actually got up in front of you. So there you go.
SPEAKER_02Even if they're slow, it's to me, it's just it's just manners. It's just manners. Yeah, it's just rude, I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. All right, Josh, and you're off the plane, sir. You've got off the plane and you check the bag and you go down to the carousel, sir. Oh god, you didn't even think about this. Oh yeah, oh yeah. I thought about this one as well. You go down to the carousel. Now, are you one of those people that uh literally have your knees touching pretty much the carousel or the no, I don't.
SPEAKER_02And the thing, here the crowding in the bags carousel, the worst is when people crowd around the spot where the bags first come out first come out. I'm like, here's the deal. Not everybody on this flight can stand here and get their bag when it first comes out. Yeah, so I will, you know, I'll stand around it, but I don't even have to be right, I don't have to be right next to it. No, I'll I'll stand back and I'll see my bag. It has all my stickers on it. I'll just grab it. Yeah, you're not gonna get in it any really that much faster by no scrouting it.
SPEAKER_04Not at all. In actual fact, I think personally, you it'd be quicker for everyone involved if everyone did take one or two steps back from the carousel itself. So, because I've had it before with Josh, where I've seen my my baggage come out, and I'm I'm I'm struggling to actually find like a little rabbit hole, so to speak, between people so I can reach my arm in and grab my bag. From the carousel. That's how bad some things are, too. So the carousel baggage crowding is a thing. Please, please. We are all excited to get out of there. We're all excited to get off the plane. We're all excited to go to our destinations, whether it be home or travel. But just don't crowd that baggage carousel. See, this is really a PSA, Josh.
SPEAKER_02This really we're helping society.
SPEAKER_04We are helping society here. We are absolutely so um there we go. So that's the baggage carousel itself. Um now, Josh, any particular annoying passenger habit that you, sir, now I'm gonna turn the table on you, that you, sir, have been guilty of. What what have you thought to yourself, oh maybe I do that and I shouldn't do that? What what a guilty habit that you have?
SPEAKER_02No, I'm the perfect flight flight customer. I can't think of I can't think of a single one.
SPEAKER_04Really?
SPEAKER_02I don't think so. Well, you've fly you've flown with me, so you can you can confront me, but I can't I can't think of one. I uh sometimes I sometimes I bend the rules sometimes. So I think I might be more not annoying to the other passengers, no, no, no. But I think I might annoy the flight attendant with something that I might do or like a rec a request I might have. Oh yes. So there's this there's this one little device that I that I got. It was a it was a drink shelf that you could stick into the window, and it's it it folds down, it's it folds out and you stick it in the window, and then you have your own window cup holder. Yeah, and so I put this thing in in the window, and the flight attendant comes by and goes, You cannot have that. It is attached to the plane, and I'm literally like and then I take it out, I'm like, it's not attached to the plane, it's fine. I was like, I literally got this. This is designed for this reason. Yeah, this is an invention, and I so I so I put it back in. She's like, No, you cannot have that. It is attached to the plane. I'm like, oh my gosh, it's not hurting anybody. What about a pillow?
SPEAKER_04Well, you it's leaning a pillow against the pillow, yeah. But it's she that you it's leaned against, it's leaned against it.
SPEAKER_02But you can even argue this little this little thing is leaning against the window. Anyway, they kept on you know, one flight, it was like the flight attendant had never seen it before. She looked she was like, Oh my gosh, that's so cool! Awesome. I'm like, thank you. Next flight, next flight, same or like you can't, you cannot have that. No, it is attached to the plant. I'm like, what? I was like, I was just in the same brand flight, and they said it was fine. No, you can't have it, it's attached to the plant. So I I've been a little bit of a Karen. Um, because I wanted to use my cool, fancy little like I thought I was like savvy traveler. I got my own little drink holder in the window.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you did have, I do remember one because I don't I don't think I've actually flown with you, Josh. I've met you in a lot of airports, but don't think I've actually flown in the same aircraft. Maybe not so at the same time. That's interesting. Because as you said before, I'm a United guy and you're a Delta guy. So that's right. We haven't rare. I don't think we've actually flown, flown together. Okay. So there you go. Um What about you? I was gonna say, Josh, but more importantly, for you, uh, just to keep it going as well. Tell us about the story. I think you've told it before in one of the one of the episodes. Might have been a downgrade for you, whereby oh god, whereby you could sir could not get your uh your television thing to work in.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it happens repeatedly, more than one time. When you look around and every single screen is working, and yours is not working, and you're like, excuse me, ding, you press the button. Oh, yeah, we need to reboot that. And then they walk and they finish made giving all the drinks, and then they forget, and I'm like, Hey, have you rebooted it? Oh yeah, sorry. Well, okay. Then they start rebooting it, and then it gets stuck, it's like crashed, and by the time, by the time they finally get it working, I'm done with the flight. So annoying.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, or the down part of the flight.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, or they give you the head like the headphone jacks broken so you can watch it, but you can't l hear it, you can't even listen to it. I've had that happen to me too. Um, so yeah, the entertainment system, I mean, you you you get a delta flight, uh maybe a little more expensive flight, so you can like actually have some on air or in-air entertainment, and then when it's not working, oh, that's such a pet peeve.
SPEAKER_04I knew there was something of you, Josh. That's that that that for you is a uh a bug bear as well. So there you go. There you go. Um for me personally, I don't think I think me, my only one is, and I know I do it, is the standing up at the at the when we when we sort of I know, I know what I do, and there's a reason why I do it in my mind. I know there's people watching me behind me going, Look at this idiot. There's there's yeah, that's me.
SPEAKER_00Joshua's behind me going, Oh yeah, what are you gonna do? So where are you going? Where are you going? Where are you going, sir? Where are you going?
SPEAKER_04I know there's people behind me say that. You know, I don't mind because there's a reason for it in my mind, and that's all that matters. See, so there you go. And in most cases as well, here in America, is it I'll turn around or something will happen, and you know, and I'll turn around and I'll say something, and when I say it as well, I make sure that I really, really hammer in the Australian accent, like, yeah, oh, I'm gonna get rid of it off this flight, eh? Yeah, and then people go, Oh, he's from Australia, and they don't care then. No, I could do almost anything. And the Americans love Australians that much that I could almost do anything, and they're like, Oh, no, he's a he's Australian, he can stand up. This is what he does. Like, you know, that's what they do in a down under Australia. See, so I can get away with it, Josh. I like it. See, so there we go. So there we go. All right, um, let me see
The Joys Of Flight And A Reset
SPEAKER_04now. Anything else in regards to um let's get on to the good stuff because it's it's weird.
SPEAKER_02Let's get into the good stuff. We've gone to through 50 minutes so far of rants and rave. Not raves, it's time to rave about flight.
SPEAKER_04Yes, exactly. So give me so give me a very good experience you've had while flying.
SPEAKER_02Well, I'm just gonna say, in general, overall, if you think about flight, it is a miracle. The fact that you can get into a gigantic tube in a seat in the air, and you are flying at hundreds of miles per hour in a seat, flying tube in the air, and you can go all the way across this whole planet and land somewhere in safely in less than 24 hours, yeah, is is actually a miracle, which is so so cool. I mean, there's there's places you know, you might Craig, you might not be here right now. You might not be in America. No, I wouldn't because would you take would you take a you might take a boat to cross, but still I would not have taken a boat in 2018 when I first came over here for the purpose of a giga event in Cincinnati.
SPEAKER_04I would not take you know how long that that boat would take to get here, you know, days, days, weeks even sometimes. So yeah, no, I'm good with that. Thank you very much. Um, mate, for me personally, is uh I there's one time that I remember, and it was actually in 2018 when I did fly over here for the very first time as well. You know, very first time coming to America. Um I was very I love the idea of America. Um, I watch a lot of movies and stuff like that too, so I know all American movies and all that sort of stuff. And so for me personally, I flew from Sydney um and I flew in via uh LA from LA to uh New York. From LA to New York, I had a window seat, and there's a purpose, the reason for that I had the window seat for there because I wanted to see LA from the air as well after we we took off, but also I wanted to see New York City skyline from the air, and so I was not not disappointed at all. It was absolutely beautiful. It was a almost sun setting at the time as well when I landed because it's you know it takes so long. Um, sun was setting as well over the skyline, it was gleaming and it was was not that smoggy, you know what I mean, in terms of the the smog itself. And yeah, I thought to myself, wow, wow, this I've seen this in movies, you know, and I'm finally here. I'm living this life now, the movie life right here, right now. So for me personally, I think that's that's probably the probably one of the most magical components that I've actually experienced in an airplane. And it was more it was more that that that nostalgia, that you know, the look and the feel, that's something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and this feeling that you're in a a whole new land that you've never been to before. Yeah, and then the anticipation that you're like, wow, I'm actually here, I actually made it. It's pretty cool. Yeah, um there's also something really nice about not have you're stuck inside this tube, right? And so we our lives are so crazy, busy, filled with demands and stress. This is an excuse to just chill. You can watch a movie that you've been waiting wanting to watch, you can read a book, you can take a nap. Like you don't really have you can sit back and you just can enjoy and enjoy doing nothing. And in a lot of times, like, let's be real, a lot of flights don't even have internet, but I'm kind of almost happy sometimes there's not internet because it that could be like more of a distraction. And I literally I'm so addicted to my phone sometimes, like I won't have the internet, and then I'm like, what can I do on my phone that doesn't have the internet?
SPEAKER_03And I go through go through my camera roll.
SPEAKER_02I was like, wow, my camera, my can I love the my my app, the camera roll. It's like you're looking through a photo album.
SPEAKER_04It's all selfies of me. I love that camera roll. Either that or you're like, oh, I gotta go through the camera roll because I need to like uh get space back for the next videos I'm gonna shoot when I get to my destination. Which I've exactly if you don't know uh everyone listening out as well. Josh, there's been times where he said to me, Craig, can I borrow your phone? Because mine is out of space. So like it's not anymore, Craig.
SPEAKER_02Not anymore. I finally, I finally knuckled up to the bar and I got I got Scott Burks, Scott Burks knuckled up to the bar.
SPEAKER_04He's gonna listen to this and go, Josh took that from me. Knuckling up to the bar is uh let everyone know, knuckling up to the bar is a Scott Burks, uh copyright uh yeah, copyright 2026.
SPEAKER_02Um but no, I have iCloud now. So yeah, because remember when I took my Camino trip, I decided to do it all on my phone. So now I have pretty much a limited space for ten dollars a month. And you know what? It's the best ten dollars a month I think I spend every month. I don't have to worry about my phone filling up, which is really nice.
SPEAKER_04That's really nice. But I'm like you, Josh, when it comes to disconnecting. Um, I I am very much an advocate of never ever ever buying the Wi-Fi or doing a plane with Wi-Fi. I do not, even if it is Wi-Fi for free, I still don't connect to that particular Wi-Fi. I want to disconnect, I want to take that time. Yes, even if it's a 15-hour flight to Australia, it makes a difference for me. I have enough things downloaded on like movies and TV shows on my iPad that I want to watch. So for me, it's like a catch-up, you know what I mean? Like I catch up on the movie that I haven't with zero distractions. We all know, Josh, you know, you're sitting in your lounge room right now and you're thinking to yourself, you know, I want to watch this movie. So you start watching the movie within 10 or 15 minutes of the movie. If you've got your phone anywhere near you, you're touching your phone and you're just distracted from the movie that you really wanted to watch. So for me personally, I get really invested and I watch movies deeply when I'm actually on planes to the point where I'll know, I'll know that I want to watch a really deep style movie whether it's really sad, intriguing, you know. I don't really do comedies on planes because I don't want to let I laugh out loud, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02You don't want to be that guy.
SPEAKER_04I don't want to be that guy, but uh, but no, deep movies where you're thinking movies, like the matrix and all that sort of stuff as well. Anything, anything deep, the deep movies is I love to watch them on a plane. So yeah, the disconnect for me is absolutely ideal. So any any uh any victories, any little tiny victories that you can think about as well that's happened to you, for instance. For instance, I'll I'll say this as well straight away. Again, United guy here, uh with the United app, you can see which seats are vacant and haven't been done. And so for me, sitting on that plane in the aisle seat, having a guy sitting on the window, sitting having no one in the middle, and you're watching the app and nothing, and then you see you see the the standby list. Yeah, and the standby list is being allocated seats, and you're like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And then it is a tiny victory, sir. It is that middle seat is empty.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. I will literally give nucks to the guy next to me if that happens. I literally do that. That's yeah, it's the only time I'll make a connection. Only time I have a human connection is when when we're like, nobody's sitting in the middle.
SPEAKER_04Little knucks, and then you get back to your little uh exactly that's right.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. Oh um, here's another thing, too, is like uh sometimes you get some really awesome flight attendants that are just like super nice, or they give you like an extra snacks, or like when you ask for the you're like, what would you like to drink? And they're like, Oh, I have a Coca-Cola, and then they pour the Coke into the little tiny glass, and then they look at you and they give you the whole can.
SPEAKER_04Whole can, yeah. United here gives you the whole can, no matter what.
SPEAKER_02Every time?
SPEAKER_04Every time the United gives you the whole can.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow. Is it a mini can or a full can a big full can? Oh, okay. Maybe that's because maybe that's because you're like you have like a ton of points or something. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04No, I don't actually have a ton of points anymore. I used to, not anymore. I haven't had a ton of points for a while now. Um, but yeah, no, uh yeah, the yeah, the extra snacks as well. But you know, it's the other thing is Josh, they come around, they go, you know, strip waffle or pretzels, and you go, uh both.
SPEAKER_02And they and they go, okay. Exactly.
SPEAKER_04You could be that guy, just be be nice about it. Don't say give me both. You gotta say, you know, you go, uh both, both try and act cutesy, trying to act like put on Australian, put on an Australian accent. That's all you need to do.
SPEAKER_01I'd be like, Good night, yes, I locked some snacks.
SPEAKER_04That's uh that's English accent, but that'll do. Um the other one, Josh, as well, for a lot of people, including myself, working outlets like power outlets. So you can actually charge your devices, charge your phone, charge your uh iPad as you're as you're watching it too. So working outlets is a must. I've seen I've been on a couple of planes where they haven't had any of the USB ports, and you're like, come on, that's tough. That's tough. Yeah, that's really tough. Um, and one more thing for me, Josh, is uh smooth landing because they can be rough sometimes. So nice little tiny win, a nice little smooth, smooth landing, or a smooth flight in general is a tiny win too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, because flights with intense turbulence, especially like a red eye, is not a fun experience. No, and I just I as somebody that lives in the great north, you know, sometimes you know, like in January, it's really cold, like deathly cold, and it's just magical to be able to get into a plane when it's when it's 10 below zero, and then literally walk out of a plane three and a half hours later, and you're on the beach in Florida in your swimsuit, swimming in the ocean in less than four hours. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_04That's happened, that happens for you.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that's crazy. So that's that's awesome. And the and then ultimately, off often what's waiting on the other side an adventure, a geocache, someone you someone you love, or when you're heading home, your own bed.
SPEAKER_04Well, then that that brings me to this uh question I have for you, Josh, as well. Um, if you scroll the way down, we're gonna go to the hot hot answers, they're called. The hot answers. Okay, you've already asked, I've asked the number one, it's uh window aisle. We both know that one. That's fine. Uh your favorite airplane snack or drink?
SPEAKER_02I'm a Coke Zero and um uh I'd say dots. Dots. They're they're they're a spiced pretzel that they make here in Minnesota. They're called dots.
SPEAKER_04Dots, there you go. No, the reason why I asked this as well is heading out or coming home, sir.
SPEAKER_02Heading out, heading out, I say.
SPEAKER_04Exciting. Yeah, exciting to exciting to leave. Not coming home to uh Goliath as such, though.
SPEAKER_02Well, it depends.
SPEAKER_04There we go.
SPEAKER_02It depends on how long I've been gone.
SPEAKER_04Um, movie, music, a book, or a nap?
SPEAKER_02Movie followed by a nap. Sometimes the nap is in the middle of the movie.
SPEAKER_04You're one of those. I'll be honest, Josh. Um, I don't sleep on planes. Oh, very, very rarely at all. I've I've done I've done the 15 hours from Australia, 15 hours plus from Australia to LA, and I maybe have had one 10 or 15 minute nap in that 15 hour.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's a long time.
SPEAKER_04And and and when you fly uh as well, when you go overseas, like from Australia or to Australia, it's always an overnighter. So it's always during the dark, darkness. So it's always dark, but I still don't sleep. I don't know what it is. I don't know whether it's excitement from going somewhere new or the the anticipation of seeing uh seeing who's waiting for you when at the other side too. So there you go. Um dream destination on the arrival board. What would be when it says you congratulations you've arrived at? Where is your dream nest destination you would want to arrive at?
SPEAKER_02Depends on the time of year, but I'm I really I I got to visit Venice uh a couple years ago. I just I would love to visit more of Italy or somewhere in the Med somewhere in the Mediterranean.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, in the Mediterranean. Nice, nice. Mesa is believe it or not, Greece.
SPEAKER_02That's the Mediterranean.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know. That's not Mediterranean.
SPEAKER_02I would love to visit Greece, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Greece, yeah, absolutely, absolutely. Uh, and they they don't have the euro there either. They didn't transform to the euro.
SPEAKER_02Oh, really?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because the euro is made on grease-proof paper, anyway. Um uh but final boarding call, Josh. Anything else that you want to uh discuss or anything else you want to excitement. I do tell
Airport Geocaching Munzee And Final CTA
SPEAKER_04me, tell me, tell me something. I do tell me something. I do, I do, I do. Tell me, tell me.
SPEAKER_02This podcast is a podcast guided by location-based games. Correct. And so another great thing about air travel is that sometimes you will have a layover in maybe a country that you've or a state that you've never found a geocache in, and inside the terminal, there could be a virtual cache, yeah, there could be an earth cache, and you could get that state or that country and get that souvenir if if you're able to get it, if your layover is is long enough. Yeah, or another cool thing is with adventure labs, a lot of a lot of um airports have adventure labs that you just kind of answer trivia from the plane. So there's something satisfying about just like getting some smileys while you're sitting in that, you know, sitting in that seat.
SPEAKER_04I have a set of adventure labs at Miami Airport, and I get that quite often, like, you know, oh we're we're stuck on the tarmac. I'm so bored, so I decided to do an adventure adventure lab. Well done, crack, crack. I did get someone uh on who it doesn't look like this person's actually done adventure labs at all before. The uh adventure lab, it read nothing to find here. I don't know what I'm doing. I'm answering these stupid questions and still getting smileys.
unknownOh god.
SPEAKER_04Wow. So there you go.
SPEAKER_02Sounds like a pet peeve to me.
SPEAKER_04Don't put, don't do adventure labs in airports.
SPEAKER_02Um can I say one more thing about location-based games? Absolutely. Uh, airports are big destinations for people putting a lot of virtual munsies too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, all right.
SPEAKER_02So you can land and just blast a whole airport and get a ton of Munsey points as well.
SPEAKER_04Correction. When you say blast the whole airport, there's that's a it's a game piece within the game. Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, yeah. You can actually uh press uh click click of a button and you can capture all those virtual munsies in the area. Yeah, it's known as a blast, but it's not actually blasting.
SPEAKER_02Thank you for clicking clear button. Please don't please don't make that the don't make that the the preview of the episode.
SPEAKER_04Definitely not the preview of the episode because this episode won't even get to air because the AI components will go, oh no, no, no, no, no. And you're going to jail. Exactly, exactly. So there you go. So what about what about the uh the people that work in these aircrafts? We're talking about the pilots, we're talking about the uh the air hosts as well, that sort of thing too. Do you think do you think they like their job? Do you think they're proud of their jobs, sir?
SPEAKER_02I think they're really proud of their jobs. I'd say every town that they go into, they look at the town, they go, wow, these people here, they must be proud of their town. Um, that's a damn rare thing these days. And so, yeah, for sure. And here's the thing, people be be nice to these people. Yeah, I know their jobs, especially the flight attendant, it is not an easy job. They have to deal with all this, all these. I can't imagine how many pet peeves they have. Probably a lot. Probably a lot.
SPEAKER_04We should have got one on the uh on this episode. Maybe, just maybe, for 2028, we'll buy we'll be able to wrangle someone, and I know the perfect person for it too. So, ready for 2028. We're gonna have pet peeves volume two with an actual air host as well on the show.
SPEAKER_02Our only repeat episode ever. It's about it's a it's the complaint episode.
SPEAKER_04It's the complaint episode with the with an air host. And the air host is actually a geocacher, too. See, so there you go.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04There you go. Very, very cool. Josh, but meanwhile, we do have, we're going to talk about patrons just quickly as well. Because as patrons of uh airlines and stuff too, we do have patrons of the show. Tell us more about the patrons of the show, sir.
SPEAKER_02We do. And um, I hope you are all like entertained by this. Now, this is a very heavy travel episode. It and very light. It lights. Entertain me. I've laughed.
SPEAKER_04I enjoyed talking about this. More, I think we've laughed more on this episode than the previous episodes for a long time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this was therapeutic, actually. It was. Get it on your chest. The next time I go into air, you know, uh air travel, I can be like, okay, I got this off my chest. It's not gonna bother me as much. So I hope, I hope you have found value in this.
SPEAKER_04Sorry, just quickly, until someone clips their toenails.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, right, exactly. Or takes their shoes off.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, but I hope you find value in this. I hope you find value in this podcast. I hope that you've been entertained. And you know who finds value in this podcast? It is our patrons. I'm just gonna get there, Craig. I know. They support us months.
SPEAKER_04I was waiting for you to land the plane. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04That might be that might be the introduction right there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it might be. Um, yes. So they're the ones, they're helping us keep this podcast going. It does cost money to host this website and to get all our buzz sprout stuff. Craig knows all the technical stuff, but it does cost money. I do see those bills. And so thank you so much for our patrons that help this podcast to still keep going. We don't have any sponsors, we don't have American Express, we don't have Dots Pretzels, we don't have anybody all we have. Yeah, all we have is our Patreons, patrons. So if you would like to support us, you get golden nuggets. You know what? We had a golden nugget on the last episode. We did, we did we had a little secret story that only they got to hear. And you it's still on there. So if you'd like to join, uh you can you have all of it.
SPEAKER_04So, Josh, if you if you join now, for instance, do you do you get to hear that particular secret story as well? I think you do.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you get everything from the past. Oh, I mean, I didn't know now. I did four podcast episodes while I was walking on the Camino. You can hear my footsteps on the Camino. And your breath. Oh, yes. So you have access to all of that. And so here's where you go patreon.com backslash treasures of our town, you can support us there.
SPEAKER_04Very nice, Josh. But otherwise, even if you don't uh not a part of a Patreon itself, uh, how can people find us or contact us, Josh, if they need to?
SPEAKER_02Tell us your pet peeves or the things you're grateful for. We want to hear from you. We will, I think we'll we would maybe read them off on the next episode.

Please subscribe, rate, review on your favorite podcast game. And as always, Josh.
