Craig:

It did look like and we know Tim, tim, you, but you know, I both know that Josh enjoys his hair dry he knows his hair.

Joshua:

He does. Yeah, well, we'll talk about that more later, because that's gonna that's a topic of this trip too. Do you love the outdoors? Do you love to travel? You love finding hidden treasures in towns all over the USA?

Craig:

hi, I'm Joshua and I'm Craig, and welcome to Traces of our Town, the podcast that takes you on a journey to explore the unique and charming town scattered throughout the United States join us as we venture into some of the country's most intriguing destinations, uncovering hidden gems and local secrets along the way.

Joshua:

On today's episode, we're going to Disneyland. What, what? Well? Well, the Disneyland of geocaching, actually you went without me, josh well you know, when you were here in Minnesota, remember the very first thing I said to you when you surprised me was oh my gosh, oh my gosh, we gotta go to Gilby and I said how far away is that?

Craig:

you were like five hours. I'm like no, come on, joe, I'm here to see you, man, I'm here to see you.

Joshua:

I know, but this destination is so great, especially if you're a geocacher, and I must warn you right now this is not, this is not, I repeat, this is not a geocaching podcast it's a travel podcast.

Craig:

It's guarded by a lover. Yes, that's you Monday.

Joshua:

Yeah so this location that we are going to talk about today was just, oh my gosh, just it's like a tractor beam just pulling us in because, yes, five hours away from me is the Disneyland of geocaching, wow, and I'm excited to talk about it.

Craig:

I mean I'm gonna ask you. I got a lot of questions for you, josh, to just saying because you went without me, so I got a lot of questions, but I know in the meantime what's been happening with you since the since we spoke last floods major floods. We don't talk about the weather, josh.

Joshua:

We don't talk about, but we do talk about the weather if it starts to happen inside your house. Oh really, yes, yesterday. Well, he was very confused at all the shop backs that were, of course, going. It was very loud. As I came home from work to just like a good, a good bit of water in my basement. We had a lot of rain. We don't talk about the weather, but we had a lot of rain and so in my salt pump died and I was. I was bailing myself out, so not a real fun thing to be doing. I'd rather be traveling, I'd rather be doing a lot of other things than that. But you know, so is life, so is home ownership. How about you? How have you been this week?

Craig:

yeah, not too bad of being traveling a little bit, but only two and from the airport to pick up my wife and drop her off again. So that's, that's pretty much it for me, and I've been doing a lot of doing some editing work as well.

Joshua:

Yes, your upcoming special it is your channel it is spooky spooky month and I just got to see the first edit of the Geocaching Vloggers Halloween special and tell me honestly what did you think? What did you think? It was fantastic, it was so good, it was exactly how I imagined it could be when we were shooting it. So yeah, little preview for you. It'll be put out during Halloween weekend, which I believe is the 30th or the 29th possibly 29th?

Craig:

I think it is maybe 29th. Yeah, 29th is a Sunday. So yes, that weekend is yeah, so 29th is the day you release your videos yeah, but Craig and I went to the summer to a haunted library it's so cool.

Craig:

It is so cool, I'm telling you, I've never been to wait anything like that before. It was so ghostbusters. Like you know, josh, I envision it as well. When I saw it, you know the library, the third, one of the first scenes in Ghostbusters itself and you got the librarian walking through and the cards will spit out, yes. And then she turns around and and he's there. She's like, yes, that's what I, that's what I envisioned and that's what I felt like to that's exactly, and then, as we're filming it, that was like.

Joshua:

This is like Ghostbusters. You know what our guest today was?

Craig:

all had also visited that place as well so we have a guest, yes, yes, we introduce him.

Joshua:

We have our guest, yes we have our guest Timothy Larson, known in the geocaching world as Minnesota boy. He has a travel based name. He has a destination name, tim, how are you doing this morning?

Tim:

oh, I am doing awesome. I did not have water in my basement, that's good, that's good.

Joshua:

What were your thoughts on the haunted haunted library?

Tim:

well, you know, I visited there a couple of days before you guys did around that mega event we attended and, wow, that was very cool. I did some video in there myself just to have some fun with it. I talked to this custodian while I was in there and he gave me this huge, long story about the painting of George Washington that hangs in the stairway and how one night it had fallen down and they didn't know why and they had to send it away to be fixed and all this. It was really. It was just he was all into it.

Craig:

So did things happen for you, tim, as well, while you were there. So just let people know. When it does come out, you'll see it. And yes, of course you know there are some little tweaks here and there that I put in in regards to you know, getting that feeling, that spooky feeling, right, but things actually happen for us, tim, while we're there, and I put it in the video no added sound.

Tim:

When stuff happened like it was creepy in there because when I was there, I think I might have been the only non employee in the building oh, and I was walking around and it was. I mean, it's a creepy old building, yeah, yeah we were looking.

Joshua:

We were looking at a case filled with like, like little miniatures maybe and there was like wasn't there, craig, like some clown miniatures, that's right there was two and then we walked down the hall and all of a sudden we start hearing circus music like literally it was like real circus music, yeah, and we never figured out where it came from never, never heard and we didn't ask because we didn't.

Craig:

We wanted it to be a little bit haunted, yeah exactly at the same time as well, when this actually happened, tim, this is what blew my mind, and I didn't even know this until I actually started. I downloaded all the footage and stuff and and edited the video. And that is when we're at the webcams, because this is all about a webcam cache, as you know, but people don't know what webcams are. Webcams themselves they are a location where you go and there's a camera pointed at you that's actually hooked up to the internet. You then to a screenshot of yourself standing in front of that and that's you log that with your find and therefore you get another find. That's a webcam cache anyway. There's all these, these webcams inside, and so Josh and I were actually screen recording ourselves because it's a live feed webcam. It was really cool. It wasn't one of those like steel and then five seconds later, another steel, it was actually a full live feed, and so Josh and I were recording on our phones.

Craig:

Now, when this particular moment happened, with the the clown laughing and then this clown music we were recording on our phones it paused and the whole thing stopped on the phone, like and we were turning around, we're looking around, and then the whole thing. I hit Josh's whole phone actually totally paused. He had to almost reset his phone. You'll see it in the video. And they'll see it in the video, josh, because guess what? This episode right now is coming out the day after your video. So there you go.

Tim:

I am so excited to see it. I yeah, it's gonna be.

Craig:

It's made cool yeah, yeah, and Josh did get a couple of scare, like you did get genuinely scared a couple of times, you know, I did see how I saw it in your face and I heard it in your voice, josh, too. It was awesome.

Joshua:

I can't imagine being there at night. Yeah, day and for those of you listening, if you're like boy, this is sounds really interesting. I'd like to visit this place. And that the actual, did you say, craig? The actual cameras set up in there were are designated to be to search for the ghost, the track and like they called ghost games.

Tim:

Yes, exactly so, and there's multiple cameras yeah, there were like five of them.

Joshua:

So the it's the Willard public library in Evansville, indiana, which was about a 45 minutes away from Owensboro, kentucky. So there's your little bonus. We didn't come on here, we didn't talk about spooky things, but this will be released the week of Halloween, so how appropriate.

Craig:

This is the best banter we've ever had and what did we write down in the show notes for banter? Nothing, nothing. And I'm being serious.

Joshua:

We wrote nothing about the banter wow, that's talent, just banter without notes what do you mean, josh?

Craig:

that's your life. Is that's what you do when you record? You banter without no, this is true. All right, let's get on Tim and Josh. I'm a little bit. I'm jealous, mate. I'm jealous because you guys went on a road trip without me, up north, five hours drive. Yeah, tell me the story, tell me what happened. North Dakota, what's going on?

Joshua:

yeah, so the place that was the destination that was drawing us in, the thing that guided us because that's what this podcast is about being guided by location-based games like geocaching. And let's just say this right now I think we needed to find geocaching because if somebody popped into this podcast is the first time listening. Geocaching is a location-based game where you find hidden containers that are hidden all over the world, and sometimes those containers can be very, very creative and they can be called gadget caches. Where you get to it and it looks, for example, like like just a normal thing, like like a birdhouse, but all of a sudden you realize there's some sort of like puzzle that you have to solve in on-site to open it. So this place called Gilby, north Dakota, which I don't know, I think the population Tim, I didn't look it up, but I think it's like 250 people- I don't know.

Joshua:

The main street is literally like a block and a half long yes, it's a block and a half long and I would guess most of those 250 people like live like probably in farms outside, outside of the actual Gilby proper. Josh, josh 242 I was close, I was close, I did go over, however, so if I was on the prices right, I would.

Tim:

That would not I should have said I just said one person.

Joshua:

That would have been good because because the one person that lives there is a man named Chad. In the geocaching world he's known it as trikashius and he has created some of the most interesting, creative, ingenious geocaches that I've ever seen. Now, keep in mind I have been All over the world. I've been to Germany, I've been to a lot of places. I've been out West Virginia to do West Virginia Tim land. I've seen a lot of amazing geocaches, but the geocaches that he has come up with, that that he literally has been inspired with from his dreams- and that's not a joke.

Joshua:

Dreams geocaches, creative geocaches. He has a little notebook next to his bed and he wakes up in the middle of the night and he writes them down and then he creates them and Makes them come to life. So I would say there's a probably about 70, maybe 70 of these geocaches out in the fields of Gilby, north Dakota, which is the. The big city next to Gilby, north Dakota is Grand Forks, north Dakota.

Craig:

Yeah, Well, that reminds me Josh as well, because I remember I dream about geocaching. Used to not as much anymore, I've got more on my plate now, but I used to as well, and I actually created a geocache from a dream as well. But that was very, very evil and it was. I think I told you before it's a multi-cache itself and I used to call it rock paper scissors, and so you go to the first waypoint and then you pick rock paper scissors and there's three different waypoints you can select. So you go the next one and you pick again rock paper scissors and there's another three waypoints you select, you get all the way. So it happens four times. You get all the way to the end and it pretty much will say Sorry, wrong path, go back, because there's only one, correct way to go through you see that they were all clever stages.

Craig:

And yeah, I still remember one of the first logs I got on. It was please, please, do not dream like this again. This is not a dream, it's a nightmare.

Joshua:

Oh, that's funny. Yes, this, the inspiration of this place, is very similar to a movie that we both love, and that is feel the dreams, because, he has built something there where they double the population every fall with a, with an event called Gilby gone wild, and he puts out 10 new caches every year and truly he's a farmer. Yeah, try cash, he's a farmer. He dreams up these geocaches and he makes them come to life and then people come so what's what's gonna happen, josh?

Craig:

what's gonna happen when they have a mega event? Because it's gonna happen, I think it's gonna happen. I'm not sure if the town of you'll be used, ready for that.

Joshua:

I think they can handle it as long as enough geocaches volunteer to help out.

Joshua:

Yeah, I think they can handle it and because your grand forks is a pretty popular city. So let's talk a little bit about Grand Forks, because Tim and I did spend some time in Grand Forks and if you're not a geocachery, it is. It is a small, smallish city that's worth Visiting, but it's the third most populous city in North Dakota, has about 60,000 people. It's on the Minnesota Minnesota North Dakota border, on the Red River, which is a river that is known. It has historical significance for flooding a lot and Tim and I actually Did an earth cache that weekend because it was also International Earth Cache Day and we did Appropriately, we did a earth cache. All about flooding. Yes, the, the city's main Employer and what makes the city probably fairly large is that is the home of the University of North Dakota.

Tim:

Home of them.

Joshua:

Is it the bison? Is it the bison?

Tim:

No, Come on, I don't remember. I don't remember. I remember it used to be. It used to be the North Dakota fighting Sue.

Craig:

Oh yeah, now they're the fighting Something because, because isn't the world's largest bison actually in North Dakota? I still have to recall that.

Joshua:

I don't know that I'm not sure it might keep.

Craig:

You know, look it up.

Joshua:

Yeah, it might be. Yeah, not where we were. So Tim and I, Tim drove yeah.

Tim:

I drive, I drive and Josh navigates.

Joshua:

Yes, oh yeah is it really tough when you navigate from Minneapolis to no? It's really like one to wrote to freeways, right to freeways, one turn. Basically, it's a pretty straight shot. And so see, we went, went up there, and by the time we left early in the morning, by the time we got there, we were hungry, craig and tell him we were. We were thinking, you know, we just want to grab a quick bite. Yes, we were gonna because we want to get to Gilby man ASAP. Yeah, we want to get to.

Tim:

Gilby. So we were thinking sandwiches, thinking like you know yeah subway Jimmy John's something? No, you know, you know.

Joshua:

We were thinking. We were thinking of you, craig. Why we were. We navigated right to Jersey Mike's yeah, one of the juice I'm.

Craig:

I'm signed by Jersey Marks. It is a good sub. It's better than subway.

Joshua:

It is good. It is good, it's a great sub, especially if you go in.

Tim:

Mike's way and we navigated right to it.

Joshua:

Yeah, we did and did but that, yeah, did we eat at Jersey Mike's? We did, heck, no, it was a strip mall and we saw this place that caught our attention. It was called the vinyl taco.

Tim:

And we're living, if we were so pleasantly surprised, yeah, I mean we would prefer right, normally we prefer a local place anyway something more local to the community.

Joshua:

Sure, exactly, it's a good tip, people you know yeah or local, but although later in this podcast You're gonna find out my favorite, my favorite chain restaurant in America, which I think is the best, but we'll get to that in a little bit. So we went to the vinyl taco. This place is a Vinyl record, rock and roll inspired restaurant. Oh yeah, awesome.

Craig:

We're gonna come by.

Joshua:

Oh yeah, well, that's all we have. We have a record player. We have tons of vinyl. If I buy new music, if I buy music don't stream it, I buy it on vinyl. Now, that's just my thing yeah yeah, vinyl.

Joshua:

Last year was the first time that vinyl outsold CDs. Cds are dead dead, yeah, they did. They go on. Tim and I had a great conversation about that, but here's so cool that, so the play I made a tick tock of it or a short so you can watch it. We'll put it in the show notes. But this place is, yeah, kind of the 70s vinyl inspired. You had all these rock rock stars up on the walls. You had a like, a Bunch of like amps and stuff. You walk in, there's guitars that you can hold and the there's vinyl records everywhere and get this right. This is my favorite thing. The actual menus were vinyl records.

Tim:

No, yeah, the menus were records. We both like I think I bought the bar jars dropped when she handed us those things, wow.

Craig:

Tell me, though I have a question for you, because all I can picture as well it did. They have like a we we call them a lazy Susan, but like a turntable in the middle of the table so you can actually share a meal.

Joshua:

That would be a good idea, but they didn't have that. But they did have the ceiling. Fans had had records in the middle of them.

Tim:

So they said the vinyl. The vinyl was spinning, it was turning, it was a very, it was a very cool restaurant and the tacos were oh.

Craig:

That was my next question. What did you eat? What did you have Like this, what did you kind?

Tim:

of like a streets street taco style. Yeah you know the kind of smaller tacos, so I mean we both ate three of them.

Craig:

Soft tacos are hard, show soft, oh yeah soft.

Tim:

Yeah, and I had. I had one. One of mine was called the gringo taco.

Craig:

Which is no, you're so close to Mexico Basically.

Tim:

American style ground beef, you know, cheese, lettuce, that kind of thing, and then, I think I had some Barbacoa and it was all wonderful.

Craig:

Yeah, yeah and Josh, what did you have mine?

Joshua:

I had some sort of chicken concoction, had a lot, had a lot of Sour cream. The sour cream it just like they doused in sour cream.

Craig:

Well, the sound of it, you had margaritas as well, just saying.

Joshua:

I did have margaritas because they are you up sell me I said not, I was driving. Yeah, that's true. Had a couple. I had one, margarita, before we had a geocaching.

Craig:

Yeah, I had one margarita.

Joshua:

No, yeah, we're not singing this on. We want to keep our clean rating correct. But here's one cool thing about the vinyl taco too, and you'll see it on the video. It's a very short, one minute video. Is that the eight? There's a side to the restaurant, in a side Side like an album like flipping over or yeah kind of when you walk in the door and you can go left or right.

Joshua:

Yeah, you can go to the A side of the B side. The A side is just like a restaurant for everybody, but the B side was a 21 plus bar. Oh, you can also get food, so that sure. So, we did reason why you went to the B side.

Craig:

Yeah, the B side had like some records that not records.

Joshua:

The B side had some the guitars that were like signed by rock stars and stuff. It was cool. So vinyl taco, there's a location in Grand Forks and there's a location in Fargo. We talked a lot about that, but hey, and Sioux Falls, south Dakota. Oh, and Sioux Falls, yeah, it was a treasure if we happened upon it when we were gonna go to Jersey. Mike's, we went there instead, and then we be lined out into the country. Yeah, you'll be. You'll be North Dakota, which is again the geocaching of the Disneyland of geocaching.

Tim:

Yeah, and, and it's about a 35 a drive, yeah, about a half an hour outside of Grand Forks, and you really have to stay in Grand Forks because Gilby is so tiny.

Joshua:

It's there's, yeah there's a bar, yeah, there's a community center, there's a fire station and a hardware store, and all those things only open Occasionally.

Joshua:

I was shocked, though, when we were there. We'll talk about it, but we were there. They were open, like the post office too. I forgot the office, but they were open. We'll talk about that a little bit later. So I'm gonna just say this to our listeners we, you know, we have listeners I would say most of our listeners in the infancy of episode 17 of the treasures of our town podcast. Many of them are geocachers, so you're gonna enjoy some of this, so we're gonna do our very best, however, if you're not a geocacher, to explain a few of these geocaches in a way that you can picture them and understand them, yeah, yeah. So, like I said, a lot of these geocaches were considered gadget caches, which is like easy to find but tricky to get into some sort of puzzle. And let's talk about the first one. We went to Tim. For anybody that's been there, anybody that watches, yeah, videos, they've probably seen this one if they're in the geocaching world. But right, for those that haven't, tim, can you explain? The strongman at the fair?

Tim:

Well, strongman at the fair is what you think it would be if you've ever been to a small town carnival or Whatever you know. You get that big mallet, yes. And then you got to just smack down on something and you're trying to ring a bell, yeah yeah, yeah everybody's seen that right yes and so you walk into the I don't know Josh, you call them shelter belts.

Joshua:

Yes, they're called shelter belts. So a lot of the geocaches are hidden out in the country, yeah, and there's a field and that little row of trees between the fields to help help. So there's no erosion. Those are called shelter belts. So Tim Tricaceous, he knows all the farmers and he's got placed all these out here with permission in the shelter. That's really cool.

Tim:

Yeah, it's very cool, okay. So yeah, you're just driving through the country, you pull off the road in these little spots and you walk into the woods, right, just a little bit. And so I'm walking and I see this there's a tree. And then, right as you kind of fall around the tree, there's this carnival game Attached to the side of the tree Talking to him how big.

Craig:

We told how tall was it.

Tim:

Oh taller than me, I'm six oh. I'm a little over six feet tall. It's taller than me.

Joshua:

Yeah, probably nine feet. Maybe wow, nine feet.

Tim:

Yeah, and, and it's a huge mallet. Hanging on the side of it and you know what you're supposed to do, right? You? Grab this mallet and you whack this thing, yeah, and you hope that it does something, because you don't know what, because they're, yeah, gadget caches, right. Yeah, yeah, you can tell, you can tell what it did, yeah, so I smashed down on it with the mallet first try. Let me just try first try gave it a big old heave, and I'm gonna say the boy.

Tim:

Hey, yeah, minnesota boy Paul Bunyan style, he love it. And the Geocache container which was maybe about I don't know a can of some sort, okay, which shooting out the top and almost hit me in the head I mean, I didn't know to look out for it. Yeah, yeah.

Joshua:

And that was the geocache. And you, and then you open it up, the log books in there, yeah, how do you get it back in, though, if it's so tall. It's not that tall, oh you get. You can tell it reach up.

Craig:

A little step up, reach it. I love people videos ask how do you think back in? How do you reset?

Joshua:

It's not that tall.

Tim:

Yeah, and this one you can kind of step back up and yeah, oh, you can step up.

Joshua:

And it's so funny because on the outside of the geocache, like on the different levels, yeah, as you Go read up, you're like it's like right, girl, whip, like you can't yeah, the cash is the geocaches mocking you try again, because when I for a, I don't know if the mallets heavier or maybe.

Craig:

I'm here, here he goes.

Tim:

Bunion like snow exactly it's not.

Craig:

it's not a JCV sweet, I know the first time.

Joshua:

I did it. The first time I did it, it did not come out. And this was previous visits, because this is the. I visited this geocache before and the first time I hit it I broke the mallet. No, I broke it.

Craig:

Yeah. I broke it's no hard, I broke the mallet, but the thing didn't come out. Yeah, yeah, sure, josh.

Joshua:

All right.

Craig:

So that's one example one what you got another one.

Joshua:

Yeah, I'll talk about two more. Then we'll move on to food again. Yeah, this one's very famous. I think this might be in my top five favorite and I found 7700, okay.

Craig:

Oh, I was a world.

Joshua:

Yeah, this one's called driving miss Daisy. Very famous yeah probably people have seen it before. Wait, because we wanted you know I'd been here before. I wanted to take Tim to the classics, so we kind of the first day we kind of focused on some of the ones that I had already done, but I did find about 10 or so that I haven't found anyway. Drive you, miss Daisy, you get, you go to one of these shelter belts and you find an ammo can.

Joshua:

Yeah which is basically, if you don't know what that is, it's a box and you open it up you think, oh, found the cash easy, find easy easy. And when you open it, there's like this sort of gray hairdryer Okay.

Craig:

It did look like a hairdryer, and we know Tim Tim. You both know that Josh enjoys his hairdryers.

Tim:

He knows his hairdryers.

Joshua:

Well, we'll talk about that more later because that's a topic of this trip too. But yeah, I was so pleased to see a hairdryer finally, especially out in the woods, and on the outside of the hairdryer it looks like a kind of a fan inside of it. So it does look like a hairdryer and the outside there's like these LED lights that are like colored but they're not lit up. And then when you look down at the ammo, can you notice that it's a lot like there's a wood barrier to get into the geocache with a padlock lock on it.

Tim:

And it's weird to code.

Joshua:

And it's like three digit padlock code. So you look at this hairdryer thing and on it it says Miss Daisy.

Tim:

You're like why is this thing called?

Joshua:

why is this thing called Miss Daisy? And then you think, oh my gosh, I need to drive with Miss Daisy.

Craig:

Yeah, so you're allowed to take it out. Yeah, you can take that part of it. You leave the ammo, can?

Tim:

behind. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you take that part with you. And there's also an arrow on it that says, like, point this side forward. Oh, so you're like you know some clues as to what to do.

Craig:

So you literally hang it out a window and draw it?

Joshua:

Yes, so then we got into the car and we did discover too that you can't, it didn't work if you held it off the passenger side. It had to be the driver's side.

Craig:

You had to be Morgan Freeman, you had to be Morgan Freeman. So how is that for danger? Wise Like is that legal Well, draw with a hairdryer.

Tim:

There's very few cars.

Joshua:

There's not a lot of traffic, very, very few, mainly just tractors that you have to watch out for yeah. And so when you stick it out and you get enough speed, these LED lights start lighting up. Yeah, and it reveals the padlock code. Wow, and then you go back and you open up the geocache, wow, wow.

Tim:

I have never seen any other cache like that?

Craig:

Wow, that's insane. So two people, yeah two. If you get there like five minutes after someone else has taken it, then you can't do it until they come back.

Joshua:

That it would be true. It was good that we went on a day where there wasn't a lot of people there.

Craig:

Yeah, well, it is 242, your residence.

Tim:

We saw two other, one other set of caches, I think. All day, random, all two days, this place is a destination for geocaches.

Joshua:

People are there all the time. I'll talk about one more, and then we'll head into North.

Tim:

Grand Forks.

Joshua:

There was one that I had not found before, that was hidden last year, called Quidditch.

Craig:

Like Harry Potter.

Joshua:

Yeah, oh, quidditch.

Craig:

Oh, I haven't seen this one.

Joshua:

Yeah, and you get there, and there's this very well-constructed room.

Tim:

Of course there is. Yeah, it looked very realistic. Yeah, yes, and we of course could just fly away.

Joshua:

Yeah, Of course we had to have a photo shoot. I think we sent you some of the pictures.

Craig:

Yes, oh, that's right, this is. Yeah, this is the one where Tim was trying to be like his mother-in-law or something. But anyway, then it's OK, she won't listen. She won't listen to the show. But then Josh was more proud and so he held it up above his head. I do recall that.

Tim:

Yeah, his photo turned out a lot better than mine.

Joshua:

Yeah, I didn't want to go the I was like put it between your legs, put it between your legs, put it between your legs, tim.

Craig:

And then you're like that was perfect, Perfect. And then you're like no, no, take it out. That's him taking it out now.

Joshua:

Maybe that wasn't a good idea. A lot of the people, a lot of the photos on the cash page, are people that are put in between their legs, but then they jump and take a photo to make it look like it's client.

Craig:

That's cool, it's flying.

Joshua:

That we should have. We didn't think of that. No, you didn't think of that.

Craig:

So what do you have to do for this one?

Joshua:

So on the broom. It's a magic broom, of course. Yeah, and there was a button on it. Of course there's a button. Wow, and the button. It's basically a remote doorbell.

Craig:

Oh, like your one in journey, the bottom one. Yes, we're ding-dong, yeah.

Joshua:

And it takes you to that. You ring it and it takes you to your cash. Tim actually thought it was. The music was coming out of the broom.

Tim:

Yeah, I couldn't, I think, because I was holding the broom between me and where that location was, and so it was like I couldn't quite differentiate where it was coming from. But it was a little bit of a distance away.

Craig:

Plus your hearing in your old age gets a bit rough, ah yeah, you are 11 years older than me.

Tim:

I am super old.

Craig:

So that's the Jerk. That's some of the cool Jerk issues you can actually find.

Joshua:

Yeah, that first night we might talk about a few more a little bit later, but let's get back into. Grand Forks, shall we, because it's a larger area?

Craig:

Grand Forks, yeah, and, by the way, just so you know, josh, when you say about Grand Forks before yes, the world's largest buffalo monument is in Jamestown, north Dakota. If you want it's two-wheel-six foot tall, 60 tons of concrete going to it. So there you go, Jamestown in North Dakota. I was calling.

Joshua:

That's a ways away though, yeah, but it's on the other side of the state.

Craig:

I said North Dakota, come on, give me something. No, that is good, I'm impressed.

Joshua:

But I'm just saying we would not have been able to visit it because it's pretty far away.

Craig:

Yeah.

Joshua:

It's a long state. Yeah, so you know, whenever we go to these communities, as we said before, we like to support some of the local establishments.

Tim:

And.

Joshua:

I did my research before and, you know, found some travel blogs and the number one place that everybody, every travel blog was telling us to go was this place called Rhombus Guys Pizza.

Craig:

Yeah, and.

Joshua:

I didn't do any research, but that sounds like we didn't even talk about this, tim. But this was this, created by some math dudes like Rhombus, yeah, rhombus guys.

Tim:

Yeah, I was wondering if the sheet, were the pizzas going to be like, not circular, were they going to be Rhombuses?

Craig:

Well, you are near the University of North Dakota, so you know it could be. It should be, yeah.

Joshua:

That's the story I'm playing in my head is that it was much like math majors and they decided to create a pizza joint. And they also created a brewery as well that we tried to go to, but we'll talk about that, but it was. Many people say that the Rhombus Guys Pizza is the best pizza in North Dakota.

Craig:

There you go. You heard it here, and Craig you know our pizza we do. I'll be honest, I now know my pizza better than you because I'm in Jersey. But just saying.

Joshua:

True yeah.

Craig:

But we went to Seneca County. We talked about it. This is true, this is true.

Tim:

Here's a try. So many pizzas, yes, so many different kinds of pizza.

Joshua:

But I'll just say we got a deluxe.

Tim:

I was.

Joshua:

I'll just say this I was impressed, like the crust. The crust kind of remind me of that place place Craig where they wouldn't tell us the secret ingredient to the crust.

Craig:

I remember that place that was yeah, she was cool. She had she talked to us on the on air as well. That was cool.

Joshua:

Yeah, it was a kind of a good balance between like thick crust and thin crust, like it was.

Tim:

Like it, it felt like it was delicious yeah.

Joshua:

It was good. It was like a thin crust, but then the outside edges of it were just a little bit more how do I say, poofy, doey, doey, a little bit more doughy. It was really good. I'll join in. I'll be honest. We waited a long time.

Tim:

We waited a little while to get in Cool building though Very cool building, old building. It's an old building. When you walk in the door, there's a main level with a bar and you kind of have to wait to get a table and we didn't know, like, how much more space is there in this place.

Craig:

Well, let's be honest as well, tim. We talked about going to places. We go to places where the locals enjoy, and you know it's a good place then, like we went to the Mike's place as well when I was in Minnesota in the last episode.

Joshua:

Oh, Matt's bar.

Craig:

Matt's bar, not Mike's Matt's bar, and I had the juicy Lucy like skirt all over me. We waited in line for that and then when we left, the line was out the door. So, guys, don't be put off. When you go to a new location, do not be put off by lines out the door. That usually means all the locals love it and it's a good place to go.

Tim:

Yeah, this place was so cool. The vibe in there was really great. When you walk in, the kitchen was downstairs down this like spiral staircase in the basement yeah, Different to Matt's bar, when it was just literally behind the bar as you walked in. Yeah, it was crazy. And then we went upstairs, we sat upstairs in another room.

Joshua:

It was an old building. It actually had there's a rooftop and we went up in the rooftop. It was a little cold so it wasn't open, but the place, what we saw, there might have been more, it was four levels. It was an old building that had four. They took over this whole building. That's it. It was pretty neat. Yeah, I like it and we did play. Every time we do trips we have to have some sort of competition so we can put zeds on the line.

Craig:

Yeah, Munzie zeds. Now we got Munzie money. We got Munzie money. We got a different game altogether now.

Joshua:

Munzie money is just as good as regular money.

Tim:

It really is Toss, it is.

Joshua:

So they put it. I was a little upset Because there were all these cool places to sit in this restaurant and they literally put us in the back in the corner.

Tim:

One table back, the only table back there.

Joshua:

And by ourselves.

Craig:

Josh. Nobody puts Josh in the corner.

Joshua:

Nobody puts me in a corner. I carried a watermelon.

Craig:

I carried a watermelon.

Joshua:

I know the funny thing is the server Satus there, not the server, but the host.

Tim:

Satus there and Tim.

Joshua:

I literally looked at her. I called her over to the table. I said hey, have you ever seen dirty dancing?

Craig:

Obviously you didn't.

Joshua:

And she said no no, I did and she said no. She said no and I was like oh shoot, because I wanted her to bite on it. I wanted to say oh, because nobody puts baby in it. And then I explained it to her. I don't think she was impressed. No, no, I don't think she was she apologized Because I said nobody puts baby in the corner. She goes oh, I'm so sorry.

Craig:

I'm like, I'm just kidding, it's too hard to explain.

Joshua:

He was a college girl he was just outside the generation. Her parents didn't educate her properly.

Craig:

Exactly. I mean, let's be honest, your kids, josh, they've all watched dirty dancing. Of course They've been educated correctly. They know. They know these things.

Joshua:

Anyway, they put us in the corner, but right next to us was a free foosball table.

Tim:

Yes.

Craig:

Foosball. Yeah, tim you thinking to yourself. Please not let this be like another axe throwing competition.

Tim:

Yeah, we have competed in axe throwing before.

Craig:

We have and lost, and Josh and I have lost and Josh and I competed in mini golf and.

Joshua:

Josh lost. Josh lost and also competitive, mere amazing.

Tim:

That's true, yeah, but we didn't put mere amazing, because I know I would have won that one. And I knew right off that I am horrible at foosball. I'm really not good at that game and I thought Josh, with his background working with youth a lot, maybe he would be really top notch.

Joshua:

Yeah, I hadn't played in years. I hadn't played in years, but we played one round and I promise you, tim, I promise you I didn't hustle you.

Tim:

Oh, he was hustling.

Joshua:

Because you beat me the first.

Tim:

I did he beat me the first round? Yeah, yeah, we weren't betting. And then, after I beat him once, then he says you know what? You want to play. Another game for Zeds.

Craig:

That should have been a telltale song. What are you?

Tim:

doing hey, we're on these trips for the fun, for the adventure. This is true. You know the risk is important.

Joshua:

What's the few things between mites? It was amazing. I just came to life, oh look at that, he's strong hand came back.

Craig:

Oh, I would just use my strong hand.

Tim:

He was rocketing those balls into the net, yep.

Craig:

Yep Exactly.

Joshua:

I did win game two.

Craig:

Josh loves, he's got a lover or affinity with his claw machines and that takes. That takes dexterity skill.

Tim:

You know, with his hands.

Craig:

You should have known you were being hustled, Tim.

Tim:

Yeah Well, I got my payback later 500 Zeds, 500 Zeds down the drain. Yep, yep. But that's not the end of the story. No, there's payback later OK so what happened.

Joshua:

And then we went to our Airbnb. And you know, when you take geocachers, we'll understand this. Usually when you're geocaching, it's like you're not. You don't need a place to like spend a lot of time, you just need a place to lay your head. You know, in the words of Briscoe Darling from the Andy Griffith Show, all you need is a bed and a Bible.

Craig:

That's all you need and Josh needs a hair dryer too for the morning and a hair dryer.

Joshua:

And this one had a bed, no Bible and no hair dryer. Oh my gosh.

Craig:

Tim.

Joshua:

It happened again.

Craig:

You saw it for the second time. I mean, let's be honest people, this is an audio only podcast. Tim does not need a hair dryer.

Tim:

No, I'll just say that he does not. Not a lot of hair left up there.

Craig:

So, josh, what did you do with no hair dryer? Did you go back to driving Miss Daisy Hat?

Tim:

Hat. Well, hat, yes, but wind first. He wind first and then a hat.

Joshua:

But here's the thing that's funny we pull up to this Airbnb Again, it wasn't. So we pull up and like oh, this is interesting.

Tim:

Well you think of Airbnb's. You think of, oh, a cozy quaint little cabin or something nice.

Joshua:

No.

Tim:

This was like in the middle. Across the street there were huge fuel storage tanks.

Craig:

So, josh, it's not like that time where you thought you were staying at a gas station, but it was a beautiful place behind the gas station. I remember you talking about that one as well, so it wasn't like that.

Joshua:

So Tim looks at the map.

Tim:

I think you looked at the Munze map and you can see what this place used to be Used to be yeah and tell him it was like America's best in, or whatever it was.

Craig:

It was a hotel.

Tim:

One of those really cheap hotel chains. Oh, OK, but clearly this place wasn't even good enough for that.

Craig:

So someone bought the whole thing and then just were renting out rooms on the.

Joshua:

Airbnb Well there were people that actually live there. They converted some of these to apartments. So it was nice. I'll just say this it was nicer than America's home best Like. When we went in it was like a nice wood floor, there was a nice kitchenette, we had two rooms.

Tim:

Anybody who travels with Josh knows you want two rooms, exactly, of course, no, the inside our room. It was nice, yeah, yeah.

Joshua:

But it was haunted.

Tim:

The building wall was not.

Joshua:

Speaking of spooky. It was haunted.

Craig:

Really.

Joshua:

Like it's like what, 12.30 at night.

Craig:

Yeah.

Joshua:

And all of a sudden the TV turns on by itself and starts blasting.

Tim:

Yeah, tim and I come out looking good In the living room because we're both in separate rooms with our doors closed and we both had been woken up by this and I thought maybe it was.

Craig:

you know, because there's a lot of people in this building, I thought somebody's making a lot of racket and whatever but it wasn't that it was the ghost and one of you didn't roll over on the remote control because you were in your own house.

Tim:

No, it was out in the living room.

Joshua:

No, yeah, wow, the other one that we saw in the movie was A. It's haunted or B, like the apartment next door of the infrared remote control. Like made it through the wall and turned on our TV.

Tim:

Yeah, it's haunted it's haunted.

Craig:

It's haunted. Happy Halloween everybody. Happy Halloween, it's haunted. It's haunted, all right.

Joshua:

So then we got a good night's sleep and then we're like we want to have another.

Craig:

Josh, Josh, how the heck did you get a good night's sleep after that? To be honest with you, I couldn't.

Tim:

I couldn't Just saying we turned the volume all the way down in case it would happen again.

Joshua:

Yes, yeah, we did so it might have happened again but we show those ghosts. Yeah, Boss, you're not going to get us again. You ghost Maybe.

Craig:

Tim, tim. I think the ghosts themselves were getting their payback on Josh with his you know his, his his loud activities of an evening when he goes to sleep. Oh my God, he does wake the dead. Yes, so after that night, what happens then?

Tim:

Then we were hungry again. We got hungry again.

Joshua:

And we wanted to, you know, support local.

Craig:

You guys eat in geocache. That's what we do.

Joshua:

Yes, that's what this one should be called Eating in geocaching and ghosts.

Tim:

Yeah.

Joshua:

But again, I did my research ahead of time, wanted to find a great breakfast place and every blog travel blog said go to Darcy's Cafe.

Tim:

Yeah.

Joshua:

And I was like oh, Craig, you would have loved this place. I took a picture of it when we were there and I sent it to you Because the whole time, me and Tim were like, oh my gosh, Craig would love this place.

Tim:

Yeah, yeah, craig, you would love it. We arrived there and again it's in kind of like an industrial area.

Craig:

Yeah, yeah.

Tim:

Well, most of Grand Forks is an industrial area, I think.

Craig:

Yeah.

Tim:

But anyway, we arrived there and there's a good amount of cars outside, which is a good sign, pat.

Craig:

Yeah, yeah, that's good.

Joshua:

We were confused because we were like we're going to show up. It said that it placed opened at 730 on the internet. Yeah, when we got there it was packed. We're like wait a minute.

Tim:

They opened a lot earlier than that.

Joshua:

I think they opened earlier just because all the locals knew when it really opened. Because when we got, there it was packed Like and it was so cool. It was like that sort of like that U-shaped bar, like the single, like in the middle of the whole. Yeah, counter in there In the middle, like a bar counter in the middle and then a few booths on each side and it was pretty tiny.

Tim:

So it was packed and there were open spaces at the counter when we walked in.

Joshua:

Yeah, but we don't dare.

Tim:

They, well, you have to wait to be seated, okay yeah. And then so the nice lady comes over and she says you got to wait a minute. And we're like well, we're thinking like well, there's open spots to sit. Why are we waiting? We found out later why.

Joshua:

Yeah, she gave us.

Tim:

She gave us a booth. She had to clear a booth and then she gave us a booth.

Joshua:

Yeah, those are for the regulars.

Tim:

Yeah, because soon after that.

Joshua:

Yeah, charles came in.

Tim:

Yeah, a group of farmers.

Joshua:

And she was like sit down.

Craig:

Charles, she knew all their names. The regulars have got their normal seats and the older regular stall. They need to sit in the exact same seat.

Tim:

Yeah, and she took one look at us and knew out of towners.

Joshua:

Well, actually, when we walked in, everybody looked us. And all of a sudden, I heard the music and everybody looks at us and like strangers in town.

Craig:

Yeah, yeah, where are they Gunslingers. But what did you have then to eat? Oh gosh.

Joshua:

I had Dave's special. I don't know who Dave is, but he knows how to make a special. It was basically a pile of breakfast. It was just like imagine, like Chipotle. You know how they just kind of inch up all that just kind of makes it. This is like a Chipotle breakfast. They put hash browns and then they put fries, sausage, bacon, ham, onions. It's like omelet, but it wasn't encased in egg, so they just they threw everything in there and it was just like a pile of breakfast.

Craig:

It was so, so tasty. It's not like breakfast we had at midnight that time either.

Tim:

So yeah, I just had a standard kind of a more standard breakfast Eggs, you know, french toast bacon and it was wonderful.

Craig:

The stock stand Well. There you go. So it was good food then. Oh, it was great Again. The locals know where to eat, see, just saying.

Joshua:

It was great atmosphere too. We're literally listening to these people at the counter and they're like hey, hey, charlie, have you got your crops out yet? Literally.

Craig:

Oh really.

Joshua:

Yeah, it's so funny because Grand Forks is like a big town, so clearly people are coming from from the farms in the Darcy's it was. It was hometown. It was a perfect Midwestern diner.

Craig:

This is Saturday morning too, so that might be their Saturday morning ritual Like it was.

Tim:

Oh yeah, it was so good and you know, like a lot of small town diners, not very expensive.

Craig:

Oh, that's a really good deal, it's like a really good deal. It's just really good yeah, it's really good so then you went to the diner.

Joshua:

Oh, you know what happened. We drove back to Gilby.

Tim:

Back to Gilby.

Joshua:

It was it was calling, it was like a tractor bean calling our name and we stopped at the very first cash and all of a sudden a truck pulls up. Yeah, and who walks out of the truck? But Tim, tell him.

Tim:

Trikashius himself. Oh, the creator, the jio-kashi creator, yeah, and the thing is we weren't neither Josh or I were live logging at that time, so it's not like he was looking to see where we were. He was everywhere. He just is everywhere out there.

Joshua:

I'm convinced there's more than one Like there might be more than one chat. He might be either omnipresent, like he might be some kind of like jio-kashi and God, or he has, like, a twin or triplets. True Cause, I don't know how he does everything he does, but he showed up.

Tim:

Yeah, he and his wonderful wife showed up and we're so gracious. I had never met him before, kind soul, and he was so nice to me. He gave me path tags.

Joshua:

Well, kinder soul to you. Yeah, in that interaction, tell him I'm chatting. If you're listening, I'm just going to be real. I'll be honest, I was. When I saw what you gave Tim, my heart sank of jealousy, he gave me a wonderful jio-coin Wow Jio-coin.

Tim:

One side with Tricatius name and logo and on the other side all things about Gilby.

Craig:

Yep.

Tim:

Yep and some pictures of like the some of his different caches, like on the coin On the coin as well.

Craig:

Yeah, that's pretty cool. So again, josh, those who don't know, a jio-kashi coin is a trackable related coin, very much a challenge coin that everyone knows about as well, that you get, but these ones you can actually log them on your jio-kashi account, so that's really cool, yes. That's really cool Tim.

Tim:

I got one, josh did not. Oh, wow, I don't know.

Joshua:

I don't know, maybe I was on Chad's bad side that day or he only had one. I want to say he only had one.

Tim:

Yeah, chad doesn't have a bad side. No, he does.

Craig:

This is true, I met Chad once as well, and I met him when at Josh's another one of Josh's Airbnb's that he had that time in. Was it Kansas? Where were we that time for the?

Joshua:

Which had a hairdryer by the way. And it was in a field.

Craig:

That was actually the.

Joshua:

Let me just say can I just give a tip about Airbnbs that I'm discovering? I've stayed at like 27 now on my account. This is not sexist, but it might sound a little sexist. If the Airbnb is managed by a dude, it's not going to have everything you need or it's not going to have as many frills. Remember when we were in Lompoc or whatever we were in California and the hand soap was just dish soap?

Tim:

Yes.

Joshua:

Like that was run by a dude. It was. If you look on the thing and it's run by a couple or a female, it's going to have a hairdryer. They're going to think of more things. Dudes, for some reason, are like, oh, this is all they need is a bed and a Bible, minus the Bible, minus the hairdryer.

Tim:

Well, this Airbnb that we stayed at this time didn't hit one size towel only. Bath towel, oh no, hand towel.

Craig:

No, again, that's those little techniques that we're talking about.

Joshua:

All right, yes, I try cashiest. You met.

Craig:

Tricaceous and let's do another cash.

Joshua:

Let's talk. We did many caches.

Craig:

Yeah.

Joshua:

We spent the bulk of the time, but we'll highlight a few of them. Tim, do you want to try to explain? This is a new one, and so if you're a geocacher and you haven't been to Gilby in a while, this might be a spoiler, so you might want to move ahead. Like three minutes here?

Craig:

No, they can hear it.

Joshua:

They'll hear it. It's up to them.

Tim:

Don't send one of the listeners.

Joshua:

This is a geocache unlike anything I've ever seen. Can you describe Tim in layman terms so everybody can understand that laser geocache?

Tim:

Oh my God, that was one of my favorites up there, just because I had never thought it in my I'd never conceived in my brain that a geocache would be using a laser. So yeah, you arrive Again, simple find and a shelter belt. There's a box Box. Open it up, we open it up and there's a sign that said something about don't look here because you lose an eye, or whatever it said.

Craig:

Anyway.

Tim:

So inside this box there's one spot where this laser shoots out of this whole spot. Right yeah, everything is open. What were there? Like six different mirrors.

Joshua:

Yeah, in there, you could put them, you could move them around, you could spin them, you could spin the mirrors and move them around.

Tim:

And you had to get that laser to bounce off the mirrors in a very particular way so that it would get to the other side of the box and make it into this little hole. And when you did that, if you accomplished this task, when you did that, on the back of the box a little door would go pop. It would pop right open and then that's where the logbook is. Wow.

Craig:

So the laser, it's laser activated.

Joshua:

Yes, yes.

Craig:

That's amazing.

Joshua:

But it was. It's an example of like really tricky to your cash. It was like it took us a bit to figure it out, yeah. But it's like doable.

Tim:

Yeah, because if you bumped it, you know the mirrors would move. And then, so you know, believe me, we bumped.

Joshua:

You'll see the video, and trying to recreate it on video was tricky Because, like, ok, I'm, like Tim, just slightly move that mirror, just a little bit Screwed up the whole thing. Yeah, wow, yeah. So another geocache, and I'm going to take partial credit for this one. Yeah, thanks, and I hope that's OK, chad, if you're listening. So I was last winter. I was watching Survivor. It's one of my favorite shows.

Craig:

Craig, I know you're a Survivor fan. I am, I'm a big Survivor fan.

Joshua:

And this season they had. They've had this game the Survivor Challenge, immunity Challenge several times, I think, over the years. But, it's basically, when I say Craig the snake game, do you know what I mean by that?

Craig:

Oh, is that the one Let me try and describe it on Survivor, if I recall correctly. So that's the one where it's like this big snake going all the way up. It's made of timber or whatever yes straight up, go straight up, and then you've got handles from a distance and you've got to maneuver a ball like up by balancing the ball basically on a plain timber board. Up this snake and it doesn't fall. Is that the right?

Joshua:

That's exactly where it is, is that?

Craig:

a Tolgoma Survivor fan.

Joshua:

So I'm watching this and I pause, I pause Survivor, I take a picture of it and I text it to. This is like February, text it to Tricatius and I said this would be a great idea for a catch and he's like thank you very much. And all of a sudden I get up there and what happens? He creates this thing as a geocache where you get the ball up the snake, which was, oh, it was not easy.

Tim:

No, it was not.

Joshua:

But possible and you had to have just the most steady hand. And but then, once you get the ball to the top, it releases a lever, it pushes up a block that reveals the padlock code to get it.

Craig:

Oh so that's to get into the geocache Again, very clever. You don't need it to like pop a cache out, for instance, it just had to reveal the code. So then you guess I think we did it.

Tim:

I mean I tried it, then you tried it, then I tried it, then you tried it, then I tried it. I mean, we went back and forth a few times.

Craig:

I think Josh should be better at it Because, as I said before, he's dexterity with his claw machine. He'd be better off with his hands.

Tim:

Tim did it first. I was the first one to get it all the way to the top, and it was, you know, the ping pong. It was this ping pong ball in there, so it's a little light.

Joshua:

It moved so quickly.

Tim:

If you would just move it just a little bit, it would go left or right and you get off the snake and then it would fall to the bottom and you'd have to start over.

Craig:

Yeah.

Tim:

But again, difficult but doable. How tall was his snake.

Craig:

You bite the stalker.

Joshua:

Taller than our head.

Tim:

The box was taller than our head off the ground but didn't go all the way to the ground, so maybe the snake itself was maybe four feet, maybe.

Joshua:

It was tricky you had to have a steady sitting hand, but it was awesome. It was again. It was so awesome to see an idea that I sort of had to come to life. We won't reveal any more but if you want to watch over the next several months, tim, I probably filmed in shorts. Tim I probably filled maybe 30, 35 videos Of course.

Tim:

So, yeah, we did a lot as you know we need.

Joshua:

To me, living in Minnesota, I have to have a good supply of videos going into the winter because it's more and more difficult to film caches. I'm not afraid of geocaching in winter, but cameras don't like cold temperatures and all that stuff.

Craig:

I'm thinking, though, josh, going back to this, there's so many great caches in Gilby, north Dakota and small area. If they did have a mega, I'll be honest with you, I don't think it'd be as fun, because you'd be literally standing in a line waiting for your turn to have a girl with a cache. Some people will just barge through and go oh, you got it open. I just want to sign the logbook more and off they go.

Tim:

You know what I mean. There'd be some people like that, but I think it's more fun if you do it on a weekend like you might like.

Craig:

You two did it without me to say.

Joshua:

Yeah, there's a little bit of truth to that. However, there's enough out there right now. I went to Gilby gone while last year and there was. I only had to wait Like yes, when I approached caches there were people working on it, but usually I was the next one. Now, if you double that, you're going to have maybe another person, that's right.

Joshua:

Yeah, it's a trade off because it is a lot of fun to be able to do the caches, some of these caches, with other people. Yes, right, two or a group. Some of them are like really tricky to take some groups.

Tim:

So it's a trade. It's a trade off. You are right, though, craig, because if you did too much waiting, I mean you would have to spend another whole day up there, because Josh and I were there for part of one day and then another full day, and we didn't do every single cache.

Craig:

No, we almost did, we didn't have time. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Joshua:

We almost did them all. Though we got a lot done, we almost like we probably left 10, 10 on the table.

Craig:

Yeah, yeah For next time For me, for me yes we'll go again.

Joshua:

So guess what? We're hungry, we're hungry.

Craig:

We're hungry again, again, we are hungry again.

Joshua:

And let me just say pro tip, if you go out to Gilby there's not a. There's no place to eat, there's nothing there, there's nowhere to really go to the bathroom, unless you go into town. Yeah so be prepared, we, we've got some gas station tuna. Yeah, not actual tuna, we got gas station food.

Tim:

Before you leave Grand Forks in the morning, you head out to Gilby, you want to make sure you bring your snacks and your lunch, because there's nothing out there and beverages. Yeah, yeah.

Joshua:

Because, yeah, there's not a lot out there, so. But then we were hungry, so we were thinking, ok, we should, you know, we should support local.

Tim:

Yeah, yeah, oh, of course, yeah, but local people also work at train restaurants.

Joshua:

This is true. It supports the local economy no matter where you go, but I don't think we've ever talked about this on the podcast. Craig, Is this your number one? This is my favorite chain restaurant in America.

Tim:

It's one of mine too.

Joshua:

And Tim loves it too, and so we could have gone local. But we're like gosh, they have one of these in town and I just I can't not go. Tim and I have gone to this twice together, when we went to Memphis together, because every midsize or smaller market big city has these, and that is the Texas Roadhouse.

Tim:

Oh, the roadhouse I just called the roadhouse, just the roadhouse.

Joshua:

You just call the roadhouse just short the Texas Roadhouse, and you know what I love this chain so much. True story I own stock in the roadhouse.

Tim:

It doesn't surprise me, Tim Like if I ever have to complain.

Joshua:

If I ever have to complain at the roadhouse, I tell the server I am a stockholder and I would like my kicker in my Margarita complimentary, you know what, tim?

Craig:

as well he would. He would actually say that to him as well.

Tim:

He would. He's not afraid to say weird things to servers.

Joshua:

I am not a Karen, though I'm not a Karen Baby in the corner, for instance. Yeah, he's not afraid to say weird things to servers. I would be excited if they put me in the corner at Texas Roadhouse.

Craig:

Yes, you know why and lift you there.

Joshua:

One specific corner, why I'd never had the opportunity, as a this is Texas Roadhouse, if you're listening. Sponsor of this podcast. Also, I have never been put in the corner at the roadhouse, and I want to, because every roadhouse has Willie's corner. Willie's corner, really.

Craig:

Do you know who Willie is? No, I have no clue. This is new for me.

Joshua:

Every roadhouse has a corner dedicated to the legend Willie Nelson. Oh, really, yeah, it's a Texas Roadhouse. He's from Texas, of course, so you go. There's a neon sign in every single roadhouse called Willie's corner. I've never sat there, so, please, texas Roadhouse. Next time I go, I will tell you I'm a stockholder, so I would like to sit in Willie's corner. Yes, but OK. So if you never been to Texas Roadhouse, another pro tip for Texas Roadhouse. So I'm not a huge, yeah.

Tim:

You have to have the app. Yes, you have to have the app.

Craig:

Because you can check in on the app. Yes, we like my Buffalo Wildbees.

Joshua:

I check in yes, yeah, and you know what? No gatekeeping here. I was thinking about not telling them that, because if everybody checks in the app, that's true, that's true, but we literally checked in on the app and then there was always a crowd waiting to get into the house.

Tim:

Everyone.

Joshua:

And we just went right down the front. You walked right past them.

Craig:

And took our seat there you go.

Tim:

There you go.

Craig:

Now that there alone is worth listening to this podcast for For that tip alone.

Tim:

Yeah, just don't go to the ones where we are because we want to get in.

Craig:

Yeah.

Joshua:

So if you've never been to Texas Roadhouse, what the heck when have you been? Yeah, craig, have you ever been to the Texas Roadhouse?

Craig:

I think I have Maybe OK.

Joshua:

The thing is OK, the theme is like Texas, but it's like Texas country, like country music sort of thing, and I'm not a huge country music fan. But you've got to appreciate the people that work there. I think they like working there. Like the back of their shirts say I love where I work. I don't know if that's just like propaganda, like if there's some sort of Texas roadhouse cult, maybe. But in the middle all of a sudden you know you're having your margarita One. You're having one margarita and two margarita.

Joshua:

And then all of a sudden, the country music gets louder and you're like what's happening? Yeah, what happens is that the servers all get in a line and they start line dancing.

Craig:

No, yes, they have a main.

Joshua:

Stop, yeah, stop what they're doing.

Tim:

There's a main aisle main aisle, down the middle of the restaurant and they all line up and they do a song. It's yeah.

Craig:

Is this one that there's like there's unpolished tumor floors. You know there's peanuts on the floor and all that stuff as well.

Tim:

I think there used to be. Yeah, they have peanuts, like in the lobby. We saw them on the way out. I think they used to have them everywhere. But they've kind of limited down to the waiting area?

Craig:

Yeah, Now the nuts are the ones you're checking on the app Aha.

Joshua:

But don't. But let me just say one more thing about the roadhouse, and then we'll move on, because he's a stockholder.

Craig:

Just he said that I'm a stockholder.

Joshua:

Keep those stocks going up. I'm gesturing, you can't see, but the Texas roadhouse is what I call, is in the zone. What's the zone? And what I mean by that is that the it's you. I always get the stake.

Tim:

Mm, hmm.

Joshua:

Yeah, and it doesn't have the best stake in the world. Okay, so if you go to a real steakhouse or a supper club, like our friend Megan True, Talked about. Yep, it's not the best stake in the world, but it's a pretty darn good steak. Yes, especially for the money. You can get 11 ounce, 11 ounce steak with a side two sides for a little over $20. Wow, and it's a good steak, and we're not talking Applebee steak. It's a good.

Tim:

It's good Steak.

Joshua:

Yeah, really good, yeah, so it's in the zone for price and quality. It's in the zone.

Craig:

Oh yeah, yeah In the zone. I know what you mean now.

Joshua:

So Texas roadhouse, get the loaded baked potatoes so good. Oh yeah, Pay a little extra for that.

Craig:

Yeah. So, what did you do after that?

Joshua:

Well, we were like we got to explore more. Yeah, grand Forks. Yeah, so I don't know. So if you're not local to Minnesota, you don't probably know about this chain. But if you, if you're from Minnesota, you know about a chain, a sports store called Shields Shield. It's a sports superstore, a shield Shields, and it's a sports superstore. And so right behind the roadhouse I saw it in its glory. Yeah, it looked like an old Target building. I think they took over a Target. But the fun thing I knew this about it because I read more blogs I did my research. Craig, we always talk about do your research.

Craig:

Yeah.

Joshua:

And this is the first Shields superstore ever. It's the number one first Wow.

Craig:

The OJ Shields.

Joshua:

Yeah, the Shields has been around. They were like a hardware store in like the 1900s, but as it progressed and as the grandsons took over, they decided to commit to sports like a sports store. Yeah. So I looked at Tim. I said, tim, and you know what, tim, I'm not going to throw you under the bus. But you were hesitant and I was like this is the first Shields in America? Yeah, I think we should see, because some of them have special things, because the Shields in Fargo, for example, craig has a Ferris wheel in it. Nice, like a tall up and down, not a carousel.

Tim:

Right, so does the one. A Ferris wheel? Yeah, the one in Eden Prairie, minnesota, near where I live, also has one.

Craig:

I can just imagine when I walked. It's the same as when I walked into the Mall of America and there was that everything not working there, but anyway, like wow, wow. So, tim, what was your thoughts when you walked in?

Tim:

Well, I've been in. I'm also live in Minnesota. I've been in multiple Shields stores. The stuff they have didn't surprise me, but this one, like Josh said, looked like used to be in a Target's kind of an end of a mall.

Joshua:

It did fit. It was all one level, All one level, which was weird. There was no Ferris wheel. You could tell from the outside there was no Ferris wheel.

Tim:

No, ferris wheel.

Joshua:

Because many of the new Shields are like three levels.

Craig:

Yeah right, they're like really tall. So what did this one have? What did this one have then?

Joshua:

Well, not much until we got to the back.

Tim:

Well, they have a lot of things. We weren't shopping. We weren't shopping.

Joshua:

We were shopping, we were looking yeah, we were looking for the fun stuff.

Craig:

At the end of the day, it is a store that you shop at and buy, purchase items from yeah.

Joshua:

The one in Mankato, which is another Minnesota city, has a like, a NASCAR Simulator in it, which is really cool. So I just thought, there's probably something cool in here.

Craig:

You must have something. You got to see all so you went to the back. What'd you see?

Joshua:

It was like a little bowling alley. No.

Craig:

It was called, I think it was called rollerball Two lanes and it was.

Joshua:

It was like a bowling alley, but with the pins like we're on strings.

Craig:

Yeah, I know the one. Yeah, yeah, because they reset really quickly, then yes, and the and the balls were not bowling balls.

Joshua:

They were like tiny, tiny versions.

Tim:

So it was like tiny bowling.

Craig:

Yeah.

Joshua:

But not really tiny.

Craig:

There's actually an official term for that, but anyway, I can't remember. Yeah, I think it's called roller, I think they there. It's called rollerball or something Rollerball roll pin or something, yeah, but it was for five frames.

Joshua:

It was oh, get this, this is a tip If you're in Grand Forks. It was a dollar. No, yeah, One dollar.

Craig:

Tim Tim, did you pay for his dollar as well, Like I had to whenever we go in?

Tim:

here, Let me. Let me tell you this short little, oh gosh, oh, let me tell you this short little here we go Pro tip Craig Pro tip for traveling Yep, when you go with somebody else, you should leave your wallet at home, because then the other person has to pay for everything, which is exactly what happened when I picked up Josh from his True story.

Joshua:

I forgot my wallet.

Craig:

That doesn't surprise me.

Joshua:

Well, it's because I wasn't flying, it wasn't on my.

Tim:

So, yes, so yes, I did pay the dollars.

Joshua:

And, of course, josh is like we need to.

Tim:

We need to up the ante here.

Joshua:

Yep, double or nothing. We need to play for Zeds.

Craig:

Oh, for Zeds, again. Yes, yeah, please, tim, tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me.

Tim:

Thankfully I hadn't paid him yet for the previous loss of Zeds. Oh yeah, but yeah, we played, we played and yeah, and you win. I won my Zeds back.

Joshua:

He won both rounds.

Tim:

And a second round because he didn't like losing.

Craig:

So we did it again.

Joshua:

We did it again.

Tim:

I said this isn't axe throwing, josh.

Joshua:

I got you here, so did I pay my debts, unlike you.

Tim:

Yes, I did receive the 500 Zeds in my Munze account.

Craig:

There you go, there you go.

Joshua:

And then there was also a shooting gallery, yes, which?

Tim:

admittedly, we did not bet on. And if we had Josh, would have won his 500 Zeds back.

Joshua:

I have a good shot.

Craig:

He didn't hustle you again.

Joshua:

I wasn't confident.

Tim:

I don't know, because I'm putting the dollars in, so I don't know if I'm being hustled.

Craig:

I think maybe I was.

Tim:

Yeah.

Joshua:

It was fun.

Craig:

And then what happened after the shooting? Gallery guys, I'm moving in along here, because we're an hour and seven minutes now. Oh yeah, we got to pick this up, our tradition.

Joshua:

Our tradition is we went to a liquor store and got the champagne of beers. Mila High Life. Yes, mila High Life.

Tim:

The.

Craig:

Pudas Shorties.

Tim:

Seven ounce bottles.

Joshua:

Shorties, Shorties.

Tim:

Well the thing is because it was just Josh and I, and I know if we had Craig with us we would have had to buy a 12 pack of full size bottles.

Joshua:

Great, great but too much roasting on this podcast Shorties have just won.

Craig:

Come on guys. You know I'm a thirsty man.

Tim:

The cutest little seven ounce bottles, which was enough for us.

Joshua:

They were adorable.

Joshua:

You drink them all Of course, and then we went to bed in our haunted hotel Airbnb, and then we got up and we started heading back home and you have to go through Fargo, moorhead on the way home, and for years I've wanted to stop at the world's largest dilly bar. What's a dilly bar? A dilly bar is like a novelty ice cream item that only Dairy Queen sells. Oh OK, so in Moorhead the Moorhead Dairy Queen is kind of one of the OG Dairy Queens at the first, but they invented the dilly bar. It's like, if you don't know what a dilly bar is, it's like ice cream but it has the hard shell on the outside and it holds the ice cream in.

Craig:

Oh, like a chocolate shell on the outside.

Joshua:

Yes, but I got a cherry one. Yeah, it's like a shell and we go there and I'm thinking I'm just going to get some video of the world's largest dilly bar. We're there at like what 9 AM, 9 30?.

Tim:

Yeah, and it's this place. It's chilly out, very, very chilly yeah 40 degrees something.

Joshua:

45 degrees Fahrenheit Fahrenheit and this place is open. Get this. This place is open at 9 30 AM on a Sunday. That's like that's Craig, you're not impressed by that, but that's incredible. Yeah, I don't Like. No, nothing's open.

Craig:

Most Dairy Queens are not Apart from church On a Sunday. Normally it's just church open that time in the morning.

Joshua:

So the world's largest dilly bar is. It's magnificent and I was impressed that they were open and that just travel item or travel tip, go to the. If you're in Moorhead, minnesota, which is right across the river from Margo, go to the Stairy Queen Because it has legacy items. It has items that other Dairy Queens are not allowed to sell, like old school items Like Tim got this. Like malt in a Dixie cup yeah, I can't. What is it called?

Tim:

What is it called? I thought it was just Mr Malty, or something, mr Malty?

Joshua:

Yeah, and you look at the menu you're like, what's that, mr Malty? And they have like, oh, cut my eye, josh, what the Mr Malty was.

Tim:

it was like $1.15.

Joshua:

Wow, yes, had legacy prices and that includes tax.

Craig:

It was a plus tax.

Joshua:

And the funny thing is I did a little research these legacy items. They're the only Dairy Queen that can sell these oldier items. Yeah, because Dairy Queen's a chain, because they have a 70 year like contract that was signed like years and years ago that said, we can serve what kind?

Craig:

of what we want. That's cool, that's really cool.

Tim:

And I have been in Fargo at other times when in Fargo, the Dairy Queen's in Moorhead in the Minnesota side of the river and I've been there before like more during the day in the summer, when the line for this place is two blocks long. Yeah.

Craig:

For Dairy Queen, which is really unusual. Yeah, yeah. And then what'd?

Joshua:

you do after the river, and then after that we went to the river to learn about flooding.

Tim:

Yes, because it was international Yep.

Joshua:

It was international EarthCash day, so we had to get EarthCash that weekend. Josh, we did Josh and Josh For the listeners who don't know what's an EarthCash?

Joshua:

Good question. Earthcash is like a virtual cache where there's no physical container but it's some geological sort of feature there and you go there and you kind of learn about the geology of the area and typically you just have to answer some questions that you can only typically answer if you're at the location and you send those answers to that question to the person that owns the geocache and then you get a find. You get a geocache find for it and some people don't like them because it just feels like science homework which it is.

Craig:

I'm back in school. I don't want to do some work.

Joshua:

But the world is our playing board, so I think we should give some attention to yeah, I enjoy the cache. Yeah, some take you to really spectacular locations, Like Craig. On our last podcast, we went to the Willow River State Park, which was like a beautiful waterfall, and you actually created an EarthCash there.

Craig:

Yeah, there's no EarthCash there, so I had to create one as well. Now, tim, I ask you this because when Josh and I traveled together, in regards to EarthCaches, somehow I'm always the one that's doing all the answering everything. Josh just logs the phone with me and I go oh answers on behalf of. We knew that guy. We tag, teamed it I have to say we tag teamed it yeah.

Tim:

Yeah, we were both trying to find the information about the flooding and why it's important. The frigance, since this one had like why is it important? Like how big the levies get built and things like that.

Joshua:

So there, was information of a plaque that I found. It was teamwork, I didn't just piggyback.

Craig:

We are roasting a little bit on this episode, josh, I know.

Joshua:

We can't have Tim on here anymore, because then we're just just ganging up on me? No, you know what?

Craig:

it is, josh. I'll tell you what it is. I'll tell you what it is. It's just me with FOMO. I've got FOMO, mate. I missed out on this trip and you know, and I'm jealous from missing out you did.

Joshua:

And speaking of FOMO, speaking of FOMO, there was one thing we missed, that we have to go back and experience in. Grand Forks Wideman's Candy Store, famous candy store. They have these famous things called chippers.

Tim:

Chippers.

Joshua:

And every time we tried it was closed. Chippers are basically chocolate-covered potato chips that they sell at this candy store in Grand Forks. There's actually, I think, one in Fargo as well, so we got to go back. We got to go back to Gilby to get some chippers, so you get that salty and sweet at the same time.

Craig:

Oh God, it just sounds awesome. Wow, and tell me, josh I'm very surprised about you because obviously Chad or Trucashus would have told you about this place as well and why has he built? Why has Chad he's a leading for you ready? Why has Chad built all these things in Gilby, north Dakota? Why? Because if you hide it, they won't. No, no, no, no.

Joshua:

Why.

Craig:

Why else? Why else? Why else, josh? Why else? I'm giving you a talk about it, I know why.

Joshua:

Why? Because he's proud of his town. There it is. That is. You know, guys. That's a really rare thing these days. Yeah, because when a man is proud of his town, and so he's proud of his town, he wants to bring people there. And it's so funny. We didn't say this, but before we left we had to use the restroom and the community center was actually open and we walk into the community center. Who's there? Chad, of course. Chad is there.

Craig:

He's everywhere, Wow. And then when you was Chad Bay or Chad C which Chad was that?

Tim:

We don't, we weren't sure. On the end of the building where the hardware store is there's a huge mural about Gilby, his tractor and things about the town on it. His name is on it, Not like his name, like Chad, it says Tricatius.

Craig:

He's Geocaching.

Joshua:

Nymie, and there's like a little Disneyland castle and it says Disneyland of Geocaching.

Craig:

Is he like the unofficial mayor of Gilby? I don't know who the mayor is. I think he should be, but he should be.

Joshua:

Yeah, he's the unofficial mayor, for sure. Anyway, well, tim, thank you so much, thank you so much for joining us on this podcast and stuff.

Craig:

Now, josh, we didn't say either but Tim, you're a Patreon member of ours as well.

Craig:

And just let everyone know as well, on our Patreon, Josh, we recently had a competition from Olio in Oha.

Tim:

No what did.

Craig:

I said it wrong again. Yeah, that's right, olio in Oha. In Oha Olio in Oha Oha, I said it wrong. Yeah, we had a Patreon only contest and guess who won the book? Jasmine Hancock won the book and she's in Australia. So, yes, I had to post it out to Australia and she's going to put it on her bucket list. She's going to put Oha on her bucket list. Love that when she gets over her fear of flying, so just saying oh maybe she can take a boat over.

Craig:

Exactly, exactly so, josh, if people can want to join us on our Patreon, is what do they do?

Joshua:

Yes, if you've been enjoying our podcast, we'd really appreciate your support, and by supporting us, you'll help us to create even better content and keep it free for everyone. Joshua:

Yeah, it's going to be in November.
